So far I REALLY dig it. It took a bit to get into, but once Achamian and Inrau and Esmi were having their little chat about all the fit hitting the shan, I was mesmerized.

So I have just started the first book "The Darkness That Comes Before" (am on Chapter 5 where the Emperor is introduced). However, the other thread seems to have quite a bit of spoiler material, so I thought I'd make a thread for me and anyone else just starting it to discuss.

I can totally tell that it's one of those series....LOL! I'm a little excited at the prospect of getting to finish it as I read now that "The Warrior Prophet" and "The Thousandfold Thought" are out.

I would point you towards the huge existing Bakker thread ("The book that Erikson read and loved"), but it has hundreds of spoilers in it, I think...
Glad you like it. Personally, I've been dissapointed with the second book so far, but I'm weird;)

I've read all three books, and it's my favorite finished series thus far.
So much happens, and so much changes... the characters are realistic...
I haven't decided whether I prefer The Warrior-Prophet or The Thousandfold Thought yet, but they're close.
Enjoy the series. And lo, another series that takes place 20 years after The Thousandfold Thought will eventually be released, called The Aspect-Emperor. I can't wait for that now, too.

Okay, am I SUPPOSED to not like Cnaiur? Cause I just started Book V the Holy War, and I gotta say, so far, he's been kind of a wang. He's been really mean to Serwe, and while I understand that is his custom with women, I thought he'd be a little nicer.
Oh, and btw, so far my fave character is Conphas believe it or not. I don't know why. Maybe because he is what his Uncle SHOULD be as Emperor, and not to mention he's an excellent tactician so far too.
Anyway, I figure another day and I'll be finished the first book. I really dig it so far.

Oka, so I am finished "The Darkness That Comes Before", and I REALLY REALLY enjoyed it. Well written, intriguing, with decently fleshed out characters (so far anyway, as I am sure they will get more complex with each book).
I gotta say this though. At first I felt as if I was taking a big piece of the regular sized pie, but at the end you realize that this book is simply the overture, or opening gambit if you will. In effect the small slice of the huge pie. It felt like an introduction, but one riddled with fun and intrigue and war, and dark dark baddies....hello, seed as black as pitch thank you.....
sidenote: bought Warrior-Prophet on the way home tonight!

Cnaiurs my best character. Kellhus is too manipulative too like. And to be honest I find it some what amusing that you dont like him for being mean to serwe. I mean lets face it, Cnaiur is one stuffed up guy and the three seas are one stuffed up place.
I sorta like conphas but he has too little time in the books to get to know. I hate his uncle however. How does that man stay emporer
And your right the darkness is definatly just a small crumb of the whole pie. we have the prince of nothing series. Continued later by the aspect emporer series and I believe even more after that. Bakker is writing an entire history

Actually, 100 pages in Warrior-Prophet now, and I gotta say....I kinda like Cnaiur now a little if only because of his madness....he is so bloody crazy.

Sweet, down the street. I think I'll go buy Thousandfold Thought and get it signed.

I too wanted to avoid that other thread so I'll ask here.
When are all 3 books expected to be released in soft-cover versions? I wanted to wait until everything was out. I hate waiting.

Um all 3 novels are already out, you get The Darkness the Comes Before and The Warrior Prophet in Mass Market Paperback Edition and get The Thousandfold Thought in Trade Paperback. If you want all in MMPB 9-12months would be your wait time, until TTT comes out in that format.

Okay, this is sad, and I know I should have kept trying....but I've officially given up on this series 3/4 of the way through Warrior-Prophet.
I am no longer enjoying it, and it has become a chore for me to read...and it is my view that when it becomes a chore and not funn to read in any way...it's not worth my time any longer.
I always seal this by reading the last couple of pages of a book I give up on, to spoil the ending for myself and this way I have no need to go back.
I know alot of people love these books, and I really did enjoy the first one, but I just got lost in the tedium of the march.....it just got repetetive I guess.
This is no slight on author or series though, as like I said alkot of people dig it, so I guess it just aint for me. Sorry guys.
...and in this I likely fell victim to my point over in the other thread about HP.....so yeah.

LMAO Quick don't worry tis how I felt as well. Just keep going and finish it off you won't be disappointed. The ending sets up TTT nicely. Is it the narration that got to you? Because it really did get to me...too much naration too much "he is feeling this and this is why he is his feeling this but he REALLY is feeling this because he is being human" yada yada? lol
It was amazing in TDtCB, the balance between the philosophy and story was good, it was the same upto 3/4 of the WP as well...getting a bit tedious in TTT as the first 100pgs follows suit but its picking up real nice. So keep going, no point in leaving things un finished

Yeah, I dunno that I can do it. I actually find myself not really caring what happens. The narration was a definite problem, bigtime. He needs to say what he wants to say once. Also, I understand he wants to be philisophical, but there is such a thing as too much, and it become kind of nonsensical...kinda like Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence....too much philosophy and you lose the core story.
If I do decide to go back and read Thousandfold Thought, it likely won't be till later this year or when it is out Mass Market PB.
For now I am contented to re-read the Malazan books for the forthcoming Bonehunters release....and just cause it's time to do so again, re-read the HP books.
Oh, and the kicker for the whole thing falling apart for me....too much smut. Sex for everything in these books. Not to mention there aren't really any strong female characters in these books....which makes me sad, cause I swear Picker & Blend could KICK Cnaiurs A$$ no problems. I mean really...in this day and age to make such a male centric world where women are whores concubines, or conniving so and so's, really offended me I think on a certain level.
Also, the Jesus prophet thing has been done to death...even this sort of anti-jesus prophet that Khellus is supposed to be. I care very little about Jerusalem (I mean Shimeh! oops) being saved from the heathens, ect...blah bling bling blah...LOL

I just finished it last night. It's brilliantly puerile, isn't it? Someone's been watching too many porn movies and reading too many fantasy novels...
Can't wait for the next one.
