just started Shadow's Edge by Brent Weeks, i also read the prologue of Shadow of a Dark Queen by Raymond E. Feist just last night, and planning to read the Recap-Something in The Warrior Prophet by R. Scott Bakker, just pre-ordered The Darkness that comes Before, so i could enjoy this book,
after I finish this Trilogies (Night Angel, Prince of Nothing, First Law, etc..) I'll concentrate on those long series, like Dresden Files, Feist's Riftwar and so on, and hopefully i could finish my WoT read, and my Malazan re-read,

And then lots of punching/kicking/shooting of BAD people. things are generally pretty black and white when it comes to good guy/bad guy dynamics in his books.

Yeah, the bad guys are bad, and that's all he feels you need to know about them.

Right now I'm doing a reread of Among Thieves since the followup is coming out this autumn and I'm don't planing to bring with me any books when its time to move down south for School again.

recently finished Grave Thief by Tom Lloyd.

it was surprisingly solid. Granted, part of the criticism laid at Lloyd's feet in Book 2--his over-infatuation with convergence as a plot device--remains totally valid, but character development is far LESS haphasard, and the book flows a lot better. Add to that the fact that there's a lot more delicious world-building (somehtign he does rather well), and there's a good reason to read this.

Devoured the two Gentleman Bastard books by Lynch while i was visiting the brother last weekend. Thats some good readins. Badass plots with that much humor? Yes please. Now lets get that third one out!

Then finally got to The Heroes by Abercrombie. Just a steady, good book. Enjoyed it more than Best Served Cold, but not as much as the trilogy.

Yeah, good luck with that one... We *MIGHT* see it next year but sadly Lynch has been writing about as fast as Martin. The difference being that he's actually came out and admitted that he's had personal problems that have held him up from continuing the series and he's not just an asshole who says "Don't ask me about this book that is YEARS past it's due date." /rant.

I've been a busy man since I posted up here last. Let's see, I've managed to finish Caliban's War by Corey, Ghost Country by Patrick Lee, and The Book of Jhereg (the first three Vlad Taltos books in omnibus form) by Steven Brust. It has been a very very good week for reading. I think out of all of them the Taltos stuff surprised me the most though, I didn't expect this much delicious political intrigue from these books.

Next up is Deep Sky to finish of the Lee trilogy.

just finished Shadow's Edge by Brent Weeks, IMHO this could have been great even without those Sisters of the Chantry who reminds me so much of Aes Sedais of WoT, but I know that Ariel and Vi was vital to the plot, so i really don't mind that much, she reminds me of Verin, also Solon of Polgara the Sorceress and Rogue(X-Men movie) because of the white hair,
want more of Vi!
will start The Name of the Wind later, as i still don't have Beyond the Shadows to complete the trilogy, and I'm reading post here and there of Week's Black Prism, may try that some time,

Just finished Ruckley's WINTERBIRTH and started BLOODHEIR, the bk 2 in his GODLESS WORLD series. As has been said elsethread, nothing original, but readable fantasy with a nicely epic approach.

The book hangover I experienced after finishing BITTER SEEDS was was far more immense than I assumed it would be. I tried about 6 or 7 books from my TBR pile and nothing was clicking...

...so I decided to hit up a classic that I've NEVER READ (mostly because of the atrocious movie version), and I've bought and started DUNE by Frank Herbert...

...and it's filling the gap so far. A lot more involved and interesting so far that both the Lynch film version and even the Syfy Miniseries.

Seriously though, I think you'll enjoy it. It's a bit dry in places (see what i did there!) but the depth of the story and the worldbuilding is immense.

Something I've noted already. Leto is Spanish, with darker olive-skin and dark hair. And the old Duke was a matador who died fighting a bull. Meanwhile in both the Lynch flick and the Syfy miniseries he's whiter than white with blonde hair (William Hurt?), as is Paul (whom you would assume to be mixed) at least Kyle Mchlachlan had dark hair in Lynch's version. Who knew they whitewashed Dune even so recently as 2000? Crazy. It makes me really glad to be reading the actual source material and seeing the story as it was written.

David Lynch's DUNE is a crime against the source material. WTF and not in a good way. The Syfy series was better, though there's still no substitute for the books.

I only watched SOME of the miniseries (and I liked it to a degree), I hate the Lynch film (but I loathe him as a director anyways, so that's no skin of my nose)...but I'm already much more immersed in the source material than I was in either of those adaptations.

The Mini-series was a far better representation of the book, though the cheapness of the production could be off-putting at times. If feels so much more like a stage play when you can see the obvious painted backdrops.

DUNE really deserves epic cinematography, since the desert is so clearly a major part of the story.

There were rumours that another big budget adaptation was being considered, but unless it cold be done as a duology, or a trilogy, then i don't think it can work. Which is another reason the mini-series was better, as it allowed the story to unfold at a sensible pace.

I am really glad that my first exposure to reading DUNE was while working on a project in the desert in the middle east. Really helped the mood.

And I would love to see it handled as a trilogy of films like LOTR, with someone at the helm who knows and loves the source material....and a production company willing to take the chance on a pricey production.

Read the original five but i think my mind sort of blew out somewhere around 4. May have been too young to grasp most of the sheer wtf that comes into play in the later books.
May have to reread one day.

I actually rather like the Lynch movie (although I am something of a fan of his) I read up to Chapter House, but I'm not a fan of anything after Children. And I think everything after the first one is a major step down

There is already a bit of crazy WTF-ery going on in this one what with the Bene Gesserit seeding worlds centuries back with knowledge and reverence of their order, so that when they arrive if they are able to parse the evolutionary dialect changes, then they can be revered. That's a really out-there thing for a guy to have written back in the 1960's.

As for the periphery books by KJA and BH...I got seriously burned by KJA's phoning it in with his STAR WARS books, so I doubt I'd touch anything he did again.
