I just finished off Wolfe's Citadel of the Autarach (and thereby The Book of the New Sun) for the fourth time. The last few chapters get me every time. I'm invariably moved. Such beauty and majesty, and forward-looking optimism.

Finished Zelazny's Lord of Light last night - thought it was excellent. I think I may also have figured out why GRRM takes so long to write his books - there's a quote from him on the cover of Lord of Light saying it's "one of the five best sf novels ever written", so obviously he must spend all his time reading every single science fiction novel out there so he can come up with that judgement

Now reading Grendel by John Gardner.

I finished up Shadow Ops: Control Point by Myke Cole a few days ago. It's very, very good. My Review. I'm now reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which is also very good.

Just finished OST.

I thought I could return to the 2nd Codex Alera book, which I left about a quarter through, but really just didn't fancy it.

So now I'm a few chapters into 'The Blade Itself' by Abercrombie.

All I can say is, so far I'm loving it. The characters are interesting, the writing is good, and there have been some damn funny bits in it so far. (Also, something about it reminds me of the way Tolstoy writes his characters and scenes in 'War and Peace', for some reason..)

Hope it stays this good, I'm enjoying it so far. (And dare I say it, I'm liking it much more than Butcher)

The Fires of Heaven, unless something very unexpected happens in this book, this will be my last Wheel of time book. I've enjoyed the first 3 books but I'm getting bored with the series.

Finished up my non-fic read LOST IN SHANGRI-LA by Zuckoff, which was quite good, if a little padded with superfluous info. Still, very good though.

Am now catching up with Jim C. Hines princess series with RED HOOD'S REVENGE, which is charlie's angels style good.

Good to know, I'm 300 pages in, now looking forward to the ending a bit more. I noticed that WoT books usually have good endings, its the middle part I usually struggle with.

Just finished Return of the Crimson Guard - I thought it was just OK. It was not as good as Night of Knives, and the weakest of all the Malazan novels so far, still better than most fantasy novels though. I found it kind of slow and too much bouncing back and forth between scenes. Already started Toll the Hounds.

Plus, if you stop after TFoH, you'll miss LoC, which contains both the best single scene and the best single line in the entire series. You'll know it when you come to it, and everyone who's read it is nodding along right now as they read this.

The Fires of Heaven is my favorite in the series, however the series isn't going to get any fresher. If you're getting tired of it now you won't make it through 7-11.

Good to hear; I had wondered if you'd given up on it! Expect plenty of WTF throughout, and don't expect any easy answers until the end of Sword & Citadel. (Not that there won't be any along the way, but a lot of the big ones get directly addressed at the very end of the series.) I've always loved this paragraph, from the final chapter:

Was just unable to get into the vampire earth book. Sorry JLV. I might try again down the road. It opened well enough, just couldn't grab my attention at this time.

I am, however, about 75 pages away from the end of Rise of Empire. I'm loving these books more and more. I do have the next one ready to go, but I kinda want to drag them out so that it's all the sweeter. I'm either going to go straight into Heir of Novron next, or maybe take a detour into Broken Angels. Not quite sure which yet.

Ha, so what a difference a few weeks makes. I had previously been enjoying Wolfe's SHADOW & CLAW, but felt it not going into my thinkymeatz so I put it down for a time...I've picked it back up and was 3 further chapters ahead in no time. Really, really digging it now!
