It wasn't so much a rumor as GRRM mentioned it in an interview. He still plans to finish it in 7 but said it might take 8 after all. Anyway, yah, AFFC is pretty awesome. I like Cersei plenty, it's the Iron Islanders I found boring. They get better in ADWD, which mostly suffers from some pacing and repetition problems and not much else (except of course to habitual GRRM whiners), but I think you should go ahead and go for it instead of waiting. It's a more natural ending point to the middle chapters before, you know, the excrement hits the air-conditioning.

I'm glad I bought the paperbacks rather than the ebook versions - I'm constantly referring to the map, which would've been a pain on the Kindle ... plus the spines look good on the shelf ...

Finished Farrow's CITY OF ICE - i'm not going to start acquiring massive amounts of cop mystery thrillers in the trp any time soon, but i enjoyed this book and there were a few parts (if i'm going to be critical, too few) that were jaw droppingly awesome... and i do not say that lightly for scenes that are basically conversations taking place in interrogation rooms. The book takes place in Montreal, which is a city i know and love and that added a fun dimension to the story, but despite my near complete lack of experiecne with the genre on which to base this opinion, this was an enjoyable book and worth reading. The pace takes some getting used to and the police procedural approach isn't exactly 'storm the castle stab the bad guys a lot', but i was not bored at all and if i had paid ful dollars for this, i would have been satisfied. Happily i have the author's next book (not a sequel but same setting, same characters) in the TRP.

Stross' ACCELERANDO has me now. It took a while, maybe because his purportedly post-human protagonst for the first part of the story was despairingly predictable in his weirdness and not that interesting in his perspective, but as the story picked up and more, more interesting individuals became involved i started to enjoy it more. And at some point any sf fan has to be intrigued by a book that posits...

Let us know how that one goes... I've read one book by him, Divergence (which I've literally just found out is the third part of a trilogy, though it doesn't have that feel at all so I presume it's more a series of connected standalones). It was good stuff, had quite a Banksian feel to it.

Kept meaning to read Twisted Metal but somehow never have.

Finished GHOSTMAKER, totally excellent, (if told in a strange style) and I'm saving NECROPOLIS for the new year.

I went back to Conn Iggulden's WOLF OF THE PLAINS (which I hadn't quite finished), and who knew that the rise of Ghengis Khan would be so effing fascinating!? Great stuff, so I popped out and grabbed the second book LORDS OF THE BOW. Attempting to get done the first 4 books because the 5th (which was on my 2012 anticipation list) is actually in stores now and I need to catch up!

I finished Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons and that book was chilling. Man, I haven't had such a weirdly unpleasant residue follow from a book since I read Filth by Irvine Welsh. Not that the two books are similar. Carrion Comfort was a true horror of the kind of proportions that make the ridiculous torture porn movies that are so popular these days seem childish.

I think something a little lighter may be good for me.

Ran across the Omnibus release of the first three Garret PI books and decided to give that a shot. Was well worth it and I will be scouring the used bookstores for the next few in the series. Not exactly highbrow or overly taxing, but a fun read.

Also managed to pick up a hardcover copy of Fool's Fate for $2 (I find Hobbs hit and miss with even the hits not being at the top of my list, so wouldn't pay full price). I'll be reading that next.

The Fool trilogy is not quite as good as the Farseer Trilogy, and it likes to wander, but the final book (FOOLS FATE) does have a VERY satisfying ending for the whole series.

Started and finished Donaldson's The Wounded Land (2nd chronicles of Thomas Covenant #1) yesterday. Couldn't put the book down. I honestly hated the first book of the series, found the second interesting, was blown away by the third. Now on the second trilogy I like it even more. Very impressed.
