I gotta second Death Masks. I didn't much care for Summer Knight (a pretty lonesome opinion if this forum is any indication) but DM reeled me in completely. I consider it to be the book that truly hooked me on the series.

QT is correct. everything about DEAD BEAT is just utter perfection in book form. After that, DEATH MASKS is brilliant, but i give CHANGES and TURNCOAT the edge.

Finished A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin and I really enjoyed it despite seeing that it is considered YA. This is the first author I've read that was similar to Gene Wolfe in sections of the book. I will definitely be reading more of her work.

Hey, question for the Dresden fans: will it work to read Fool Moon before Storm Front or will I end up horribly confused? I asked for both from the library and they've got me 2 but it will be at least another 2 weeks before they have 1 back. I don't mind having bits of 1 spoiled as long as 2 is comprehensible and enjoyable without having read it. Thanks!

I think you're okay generally. There are a couple of bits that are spoiled, notably certain people who are alive in 2 obviously don't die in 1, but Butcher is still building things in 2 on the assumption not everyone has read the previous book, so I suspect you'll still enjoy it no problem, with the smaller qualifier that imnsho 2 is a better book than 1 so don't be thrown off by going backwards. 3 is great, 4 is awesomeness. And then it gets better.

My gf's sister (who I got into the series) read from FOOL MOON forward and feels no less for it all this time later (she's up to TURN COAT now). I told her what happened in STORM FRONT and she doesn't feel like she missed much beyond Toot's intro.

You COULD also read the graphic novel of STORM FRONT in less than an hour and feel okay about starting FOOL MOON.

To be fair, Butcher does this in every book. He describes the Blue Beetle in detail each book, and MacAnally's, and his apartment, and Bob, etc. I assume he does this so that each book can be picked up and read/understood on its own; in fact, my father-in-law (who recommended it to me) read the entire series out of order, and enjoyed it just fine. Obviously, it's best to read them in order. I'd agree that flipping the order of the first two shouldn't be too bad.

I'm currently 3 quarters through my REDEMPTION ARK re-read and after that (and due to the show starting) I plan to start a re-read of A CLASH OF KINGS, hoping that by the time July rolls around I will have re-read up to AFFC in prep for the new ASOIAF book.

Finished The Crusades by Thomas Asbridge and I cannot praise this book enough. As a history book it's not a quick reading page-turning though there are multiple parts that feels like it. Great even account of the time and history viewed through both sides and very fairly views the major figures of both sides. I've been wanting to read a book on this era and I'm completely happy I started with this one. Asbridge does not favor one side or the other or present a bias view and when there is conflicting views he presentes both sides and is honest when certain events cannot be definitively concluded with the facts on hand. Fantastically great one volume on this era- I cannot recommend it enough.

Started Backlash of the SW Fate of the Jedi series for a quick easy read hopefully with a good continuing story in a very good series so far.

Just finished The Dragon's Path by Daniel Abraham. His The Long Price Quartet is great and this will hopefully grant him the audience he deserves with a more traditional fantasy setting (though not entirely traditional) and a lengthier series giving real breathing space to some fantastic characters. Seriously, two in particular are worth reading the book for in themselves, and the rest are hardly bad.

Finished Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon. I really like military fantasy, Steven Erikson and Glen Cook are two of my favorite authors, and I thought this was very average and not up to the level of SE and GC. Not sure if I will continue with the series, maybe when I am done with Malazan and The Black Company.

I loved the book.

Nice characters. I like their behaviour, way of thinking. Good dialogues.
The sheer scope of the world. Geography, magic! WOW!
Concise description where appropriate.
The language is easy going. This book grabbed my attention from the start. There was no period when I had to adjust myself to Erikson's style.

Some names are a bit funny. Darujhistan, Capustan, Kaliban, Canhasan a glimpse of the not too distant future?
Considering that I speak Russian and Hebrew:
Halaf, D'rek, Hara; Dobre, Nahal, Sotka, Baran


To be honest I was a bit sceptical about the whole series. I have noticed that my taste is quite different from many fans of The Malazan Book of Fallen.
Many of you love books that I not only merely dislike, but cannot stand. For example: American Gods, The Book of the New Sun, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, The Crown of Stars, Nation, Catch 22, Lord of Light, Earthsea.

I am a happy bunny (appropriate for Easter? ).
I thought I might take a break and squeeze in a stand alone book.
