Good review Pat...though it didn't sound like an 8/10 read for you personally...did you give it that score because of the ambiguous "folk who like the first will like more of the same status of the book"? Just curious sir.

It took me a full retrospect on the first book to really come to terms with things I didn't like....but overall I think still rather enjoyed it....so now I am stymied as to whether I ought to buy it hardcover, or wait for MMPB....cause sometimes I agree with Pat's reviews wholeheartedly, and other times I think he is off-his-rocker insane. LOL

Finished The Passage and I was not dissappointed. I concluded that although he could have ended the book in a number of ways, and it might not have been my choice, it was still a good ending. Hate it when you don't get the payoff but this one did it for me.

I've got about 20 pages left on Persian Fire and I'll finish that off tonight and start Ilium after that. Persian Fire was a pretty good read as it gave better insight to the Persian side and it's motives with a decent outline of the history of the beginning of its empire. It also was a much more even look into the Persian side and didn't just gloss on the Greek side as a supposed "united" front of allies coming together to face a great power by leaving out the backstabbing and conflicting politics that constantly were a threat to the fragile alliance. Definitely have enjoyed it and gave me a better perspective on those events though in more of an overview type of way.

Just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora and read about 100 pages into Red Seas Under Red Skies and I got to say other than MBotF this might end up as my favorite fantasy series I have read up to this point, can't believe I was missing out for so long.

Wait until the second half of Red Seas. You will be frustrated at the potential that was failed to reach. Still a good book, but not what it "could" have been. Here is hoping Republic of Theives is back up to Lies standards.

When I was reading TLoLL I thought it was going to end up being one of my favorite books of all time, but the plot fell about in the last 1/3 and went from smart to "hollywood."

RSuRS also had a great setup but unfortunately Scott Lynch thought he needed the book to be ~800 pages so he threw in another story that isn't all that connected to the other one.

The Tom Holland book?
It's a very good read indeed. Personally think that Rubicon was much better, especially scientifically (Persian Fire has far less detail), though. If you haven't read that one yet, do so - it has my recommendation (and read Goldsworthy's Caesar after that to fill all the gaps).

Am currently halfway in the Ciaphas Cain omnibus, halfway Stross' Jennifer Morgue (and loving it, thanks to Abyss for recommending it here), on a quarter of Abnett's warhammer 40k The Saint, and at 2/3 in Sanderson's Way of Kings. Finished Horus Rising yesterday, which I would qualify as testosterone pr0n à la 300. Much prefer the Imperial Guard stuff. Brent Weeks' Way of Shadows was finished a few days before that.

The TRP currently contains more Stross, Annejet van der Zijl's Sonny Boy (fictionalized WW2 personal history, based on a true story), Sanderson's Warbreaker, Kay's Sailing for Sarantine 1 and 2 and Abnett's The Lost, the third omnibus in the Tanith Ghosts' series.

I wholeheartedly agree. RSuRS came down as a fairly big disappointment to me. I DO, however, have high hopes for RoT....as at least we finally get to meet Sabetha, and some much needed tension will hopefully return. I think Lynch needs to have this one propel the overall story arc forward and not just have another heist book....I am a little scared that is what we will get...

There was an official blurb posted on westeros a year or so ago when RoT was supposed to be almost released, that contained almost the entire storyline, including a few fairly major twists, iirc. Thankfully in the intervening time I've managed to forget it. Hoping they've changed it since then!

I had no problem with the pirate storyline in RSURS, but it could have been integrated better. Perhaps have the pirate storyline be the "present" story, and have the buildup to the Sinspire heist be flashbacks in alternating chapters, then bring them together at the end.

Agreed. That's the one flaw with my idea. Maybe they get shuffled around so they become more contemporary with the Sinspire plot, I dunno.

Don't get me wrong, though; I stloved RSURS. I thought it was almost as great as the first.
