Gardner Dozois (ed.) - Galileo's Children: Tales Of Science vs. Superstition
~ review ~

excerpt:

---As said, the main theme is the conflict between ratio of science and the intolerance, misapplication of facts, glorification of ignorance and use of all these in propagation of fear and ever increasing control found in every culture known to man. It will not come as a big surprise that the main "bad guy" that embody most of these in many of the tales is (organized) religion. With rampant fundamentalism on all the continents, screaming for return to one kind of so called "true values" or another and seeing science as the root of all evil, that is easy to understand, but nonetheless sometimes hard to swallow. In a way I found it odd. I agree with such a view of the situation, but when faced with such an en-masse finger pointing I can not help myself but to think over some darker aspects of science...(full review)

RLY - You should write Amazon a nasty letter; maybe they'll give some free shit for the extra-long wait. I'm in the US, too, and I got my copy on June 27th...

I don't see any reason for it take so long to get one to the West Coast. I didn't pay extra for fast delivery or anything.

Currently reading: Charles Darwin's 'On The Origin of Species'

Genre-wise, next up will be Lois Bujold's 'The Sharing Knife' trilogy. I might give Joe Abercrombie's trilogy a go too, as I've heard good things about it.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I've finished "Winterbirth" by Brian Ruckley. I really liked it and the setting and story keep me interested in the outcome of this trilogy. I posted my review of "Winterbirth" on my blog.

Going to read Against a Dark Background by Iain M. Banks again, since I haven't read it in years.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Currently reading Abercrombie's The Blade Itself.

Seems a pretty solid debut so far, and I've heard the books get better, so here's looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

I also started Wolfe's Soldier of the Mist but, after 200 pages, I just had to give up. It was just...boring. Characters in whom I couldn't find anything to care about, bland prose, weak plot.

Are his Urth books any better? I've heard really good things about them and about his prose, but this book (Latro) left a bad taste in my mouth

Have to interrupt my MT reread to read a book my friend wrote. He's going to some kind of writing workshop next week, and wants my opinion by then.
