Started the first book of Abnett's Bequin series, its a rather awesome setup and portrayal of 40k life but I'm not sure I really like it yet.

I tore through the entire trilogy (and a half) — Red Sister, Grey Sister, Bound, and Holy Sister — this weekend. They are a lot of fun and I really like the world Lawrence has built here. I'm excited to read his in-progress Book of the Ice series. I'm definitely intrigued to find out more about how this all ties into Jorg's/Jalan's world!

I've not yet read the Red Queen series but if figure I'll probably have to reread the Thorns before I do.

I must say, this book has possibly the greatest opening line I've ever seen in a novel:
"It is important, when killing a nun, to bring an army of sufficient size."
Yup, already in for the ride!

Ain’t ever heard of that one.

It takes place after the Ravenor and Eishorn books I think.

Both have so far made "small" appearances as well even if the main character has no clue who that scary old dude and the flying coffin are.

Wrapped up "The Ropewalker", a historic romance about an Estonian schoolboy in Livonian Tallinn, who gets caught up in the politics of the Livonian War, as he struggles with his own identity, whether he is a "country-tongue"- speaking Estonian, or a Germanized "townsman" of Tallinn.

Some predictable stupidity from the young protagonist, making rash decisions that make plot happen, as he observes the manouverings between the various European powers over Livonia, while occasionally giving in to the "call of the blood" to assist his relatives, while feeling the disconnect all the same. It's part 1 of a trilogy, so I'll be on the lookout for the next books eventually.

Haven't really been in a reading mood lately, but I feel that I should keep trying to chip away at the TRP.

Gonna give C.J. Cherryh's "Faded Sun" trilo a shot next.

Ack Ack Macaque bk 2 HIVE MONKEY delivery. Hell of a big finish that repeatedly twists on the reader. Great fun. Objectively i know action scenes involving a gun toting cigar smoking cussing perpetually pissed off and/or intoxicated uplifted monkey can only ever possibly be awesome, but even knowing that, damn, that monkey rocks.

If i were going to be critical, one new character's POV isn't even close to as interesting as that of the characters from bk 1 who survived to bk 2, but that's a minor point.

Earbook narrator kills it.

This series is bananas and i want more, thus, on to book 3, MACAQUE ATTACK.

Finished up Ashes of the Sun and Shards of the Earth so far this week.

Ashes of the Sun was a bit too uneven for me to really enjoy it, did even think about not finishing it somewhere halfway in but it got slightly better along the way. It is pretty much YA much of the time, when not horrible horrible things go down yet is still sometimes intriguingly fascinating with backstory elements and some side characters. All in all average fair not bad not good and I might read the next one but not sure.

Shards of the Earth is my favorite Tchaikovsky book so far, not read everyhing he's put out but this one is one rather decent space opera with some great characters. The setup of missfits on a junk ship is a classic but Tchaikovsky throws in enough of his own ideas to make it reasonably fresh. Not 10/10 but solid and entertaining, will certainly read the next one.

What to read next should do one more newish book before I go into another re-read.

[Edit] Found Anthony Ryans Pilgrimage of Swords which I probably should have read a while ago in the to read list, well that settles that.

Just finished Peter V. Brett's forthcoming The Desert Prince, which comes out in August.

A little too much teenage angst for my taste and too YA in style and tone, but it sets the stage for what should be an interesting set of sequels.

That might be somewhat of an overcorrection, but I'm glad he's toned down the raping.

I finished The Hidden City by Michelle West. I think QT recommended that (?). It was very good, much better than I would have thought considering the somewhat cliched premise. The prose is great and lyrical, and it all just flows so well I thought. I'll be throwing myself into book two, but first I am diving into The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne. I haven't been entirely sold by his previous works, but this book has gotten a lot of good reviews, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Oh man, so glad you liked it! And if you liked that one, you're really going to like book 2, and 3 will knock you off your feet.

I've been reading it this week, also per your recommendation. I agree that it is very good! I like the slow build so far (2/3 through).

While the prose is generally great, there are some sections where character interactions or scene descriptions feel slightly disjointed. It's not a major issue though — overall, I am hooked!

I have started MASTER & COMMANDER by Patrick O'Brian...again...a series I've always been tempted by and never got through book 1.

And still already impressed by how FUNNY it is? I also expect to be beaten around the head with a bunch of Nautical terms soon.

Either way, I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm enjoying it a LOT.

I tried this book before (about 7 years ago?) and bailed out from the nautical term bonanza. I was given the advice (I forget by who, apologies!) to move onto the next book instead, but I'm a completionist, so I'm hell bent on doing it this time and the second half of the book is meant to be better....and the good news is that I've ordered a companion book that's meant to help parse the terms by an author who studied O'Brian.
