Finally finished my MT reread (been busy)

Went to the pile and picked up The Court of Broken Knives, by Anna Smith Spark.

Not sure who reco'd this but I'm fairly sure it was one of you guys

Anyway I started a Dresden reread on Friday, just finished Summer War. Good book that.

Not reading much at the moment myself, Masters of Rome on a slow burn perhaps I should try that Murderbot thingy sounds like a perfect work listen.

It and the second book are pretty great if your in the mood for really misery maxed grimdark.

Hmmmm.

Misery maxed grimdark doesn't really sound like bag. But I'm 4 chapters in last night so I'll plow on and finish, seems fairly short

MURDERBOT NETWORK EFFECT left me wanting more sf, so cue book one of Campbell's LOST FLEET BEYOND series, Dauntless.
Fun to be back w Adm Geary and co. The opening it way less hyper than how LOST FLEET started, but that's ok. MilSF can be fun even when it's just planning how to travel the stars to murder ET's ass.

Started and dropped a book called Cold Storage by David Koepp. Supposedly he's a successful Hollywood screen writer who decided to turn a script into a book. My hunch is it's because the script was so bad even Sy-fy wouldn't waste money on it.

It's the most generic, straight to dvd dross I've ever read. Starts out like the Andromeda strain with something falling from the sky but instead of a virus that turns blood into sand, it's the fungus virus from The Last of Us.

They contain it, put it in storage, it gets forgotten and I didn't get much further because then they start introducing a cast of characters that are clearly meant to be picked off one by one in this unoriginal sci-fi horror plot. 80 pages in and nothing but bad setup.

Did not finish, do not recommend.

Supposedly this guy wrote the manuscript for Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible and Indiana Jones 4. Must have gone down hill from there. His career of course topped with Indy 4.

Started a girl and the stars as a dual read with broken knives. I have a feeling knives will be a slow stop start for me

About half way through Robin Hobb's Fool's Fate.

As much as it's been fun to reread them (and long enough between reads that I'd largely forgotten any more than the bare bones of the plot)... I suddenly remember how much of an idiot Fitz is and how much the books start to drag between action.

Started All Systems Red, the first book in the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.

So far it's fun and light. It's very barebones, no real world building or attempt at creating a setting directly. It's just days in the life of a murderbot on a research mission that's turning to shit.

I like the Murderbot. It's wonderfully introverted and cynical. I think it's my spirit animal.

Cool little story though I don't really see why this is noteworthy enough to win awards.

Liked the ending. Felt like the right kind of choice for Murderbot.

Ordered book 2 and 3 from Libby. There's a three week wait unfortunately.

I can see Martha Wellshas written a lot of stuff. I got the first 3 books in "The Books of Raksura" series she wrote from an older Humble Bundle.

Anyone read them? First one's called the Cloud Roads. Sound sort of YA.

Fwiw, I though it tried REALLY hard to be REALLY dark but always fell short in its execution. I mean, the meanest, baddest, villainiest and most sexy dude in there sparkles and there's an awful lot of mentions of rainbows in his vicinity. There a theme about beauty and evil in there that completely falls on its nose, beaten down by rainbows and badly edited prose. I tried to read book two and started skipping whole chapters which I never do, so I gave up.

I'm now on book two of Max Gladstone's Craft sequence (I'm late to the party, I know), Two Serpents Rise. I obviously enjoyed the first one enough to keep going and spending my precious little reading time on it, so all's well for now.
