I also didn't like the first book. But, seeing all the praise and that my library has the audiobooks for 2 and 3, I'll give it a second chance.

Interesting point... i have done the entire series to date in earbook, and while his accent took getting used to, the narrator is very good.
I wonder if that boosted my enjoyment or carried me past the slower starting parts.

I'm ok with a bit cliché and YA as it'll be Earbook as well so I have to be able to concentrate on driving at the same time haha. Simple is fine.

Could be. I did the audiobook for the first one and struggled to get through it. I don't recall the narrator, so I guess it didn't have an effect on me.

Finished Limmy's autobio, Surprisingly Down to Earth, and Very Funny. Quite good, especially cuz I could read it in his voice, so I was crackin up. Also pretty dark in spots.

Now reading: Red Sister.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

A slow reading week. Been helping shutting down and moving a library. Haven't been this knackered since I worked retail.

Did manage to start a bunch of books.

I finished Ternet Ninja 2 (Chequered Ninja 2) by Anders Matthesen. Not nearly as funny or inventive ad the first one.

Started Pseudo Arbejde (Pseudo Work). It's a nonfiction research book about bullshit jobs and the kind of nonsense we waste our time and resources on in the workplace.

Started Equal Rites the third Discworld Book by Terry Pratchett. A very low risks charming story about a girl who apparently is fated to be a wizard despite all wizards being male.

Finally I finished the first five chapters of Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut, which we're reading for the Malazan Book Club - It's not too late to get in!

Can't say I'm particularly enamored with the book. I think it's a bit too disjointed for my tastes. I certainly have no clue where the hell the story is going.

Just wait until they get to the third slaughterhouse. That's where all the threads start coming together.

Well, the first slaughterhouse was too small and the second one was too big, so I have an idea about where this one is going.

Just finished Joe Abercrombie's A Little Hatred.

Not as self-contained and satisfying as Best Served Cold, The Heroes, or Red Country, what with it being the first volume in a brand new trilogy, but it sets the stage for plenty of fireworks!

Rejoice, for Lord Grimdark is back and kicking ass!

Review coming soon. . . :)

I'm not much for starting unfinished books series but has anyone read Abercrombie's Shattered Sea trilogy? The Half a King, etc books?

I've seen them in my libraries children's section which I thought was interesting. An Abercrombie book for children. I imagine it must be like reading the original Brother's Grimm tales for children.

I'd say, yes it's more YA than Joe's usual fare but it's a really solid trilogy with some great characters and action.

Definitely worth your eye time

Yes, and enjoyed.
Honestly I dont get the YA tag for this. No descriptive sex and the violence is a fraction less gory but its otherwise solid Abercrombie.

Re-read Hickman & Ribic's SECRET WARS, which still stands as largely great, with only a few minor stumbles. It's not the BEST Hickman there is...but it's up there.

And how halfway into Terry Pratchett's JINGO (which was where I last left off with the Watch books), and enjoying it very, very much!

Felt it was time to get back into Warhammer. Signed up for the Audible one year deal for Prime members since they have a lot of WH books now. I just finished Xenos by Dan Abnett, the first book in the Eisenhorn series. It was excellent. I also picked up a few WH short story collections that they had on sale. They have so much to choose from, recommendations are welcome. I've already read the first 8 Horus Heresy books.

I read the first Gaunt's Ghosts book a few years ago, but was hoping they would put them on audiobook. They haven't yet except for the recent ones, so, I am just going to read them digitally. I am rereading First and Only.

Gaunt's (ALL OF THEM). They get better and better, especially as you get used to all the main players.
The rest of Eisenhorn are great too (though I've not read the most recent 4th one, I enjoyed the other three)
The new Ravenor (you met him in XENOS I think?) omnibus came out today here, so that's worth a look.
I like Horus as well, but definitely seek out a list of the best volumes and skip the others.

Thanks. I plan on reading all of GG, though no audiobooks means it will take me a while. After Eisenhorn I am planning on Ravenor and getting back to Horus. I'm also planning on reading Warhammer fantasy. I see Gotrek and Felix recommended, but no audiobooks.

Finished book 4 of Lightbringer and it was a solid entry, if perhaps the weakest of the series so far. Looking forward to the finale in October. No idea what to read next tbh.

My friend brought back my Saxon Stories books by Bernard Cornwell and there's a couple of them I haven't read so will probably read them.

Just finished Terry Pratchett's third Discworld book, Equal Rites. Fun book. Very low stakes and an amusing look at gender roles.

I hope he returns to these characters in a later book.

Can't say I find myself any wiser on the magic system in this world though.

Don't sweat the magic system.

It's not integral to the world building.

If anything it pokes fun at magic to a certain extent

Yeah but there's weird stuff in there. Like Granny apparently has no real magic until suddenly she's having a magic rap battle with one of the most powerful wizards in the land. Like, how?

It's easy to shrug off because that's what Granny seems to do constantly but it's still weird.

And there's the little girl, who I think it's implied is actually a nascent sorceress, as in an Old Times kind of wizard who can bypass all the laws of magic and just pull stuff out of her ass. But then suddenly that magic disappeared???
