Damn you people! Tigana just arrived. It's 800 pages! And The latest Cormoran Strike book also arrived and it's 700 pages. Ughhh.

Let me save you some time...

"Oh noes, the big bad wizard made everyone forget our country exists."
"What? How does that work?"
"I forget."
"Oh."
"Yeah, don't think about it too hard. See ya, gotta go have sex with my sister."
"Have fun. I'm gonna go follow some rebels around til something interesting happens to someone else."

...Started on Melanie Rawn's EXILE: THE RUINS OF AMBRAI, which is pretty interesting right off the bat because it's a matriarchal society. Only a few chapters in, but it's VERY well written so far.

Also, QT, are you aware that book 3 in Rawn's trilogy has been unpublished and unseen for over 20 years? You're in for a disappointing ending to that series.

I nabbed the paperback at the used book store and didn't know till I got home that it's been unfinished for 20 years...as long as she doesn't pass away though, then I can hope she comes back to finish it. Any word on why the wait?

Wert wrote a thing..... http://thewertzone.b...finish-her.html

Just finished Cherie Priest's CLEMENTINE... decent steampunk story... i really liked the characters, she writes excellent airship sequences... the plot was a wee bit too vague, too trite, and key events that suffered from entirely too much 'oh isn't that conveeeeeeeeeient-itis', but not so much that i won't read the next one when i have the urge. Priest has written a bunch of books in this setting and i do enjoy some airship splody now and then.

Now three chapters into THE HOD KING.... it astounds me how much i enjoy this considering how little i enjoyed SENLIN ASCENDS.

Aiden wrote something similar when I investigated.

It SOUNDs like clinical depression turfed her finishing it in the 90's, and perhaps going back to it brings up too much raw personal stuff? Anyways, I'm glad it's not off her table regardless.

Though I'm also glad I didn't read these when they were released and have to wait 20+ years for completion.

Currently reading The Lady In The Lake by Raymond Chandler - I can see why he's so respected, the writing is surprisingly good. Finished Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee the other day and about 1/3 through Revenant Gun - batshit crazy/awesome ideas, kind of so-so writing.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Man, those penis demon scenes are awesome. Especially the part where Mancy scares them off by showing them that his is larger.

I personally spoke with Melanie and she started working on the final installment in late 2015. But she mentioned that it was a slow-moving process to get back into the series after so long, which I reckon is why the manuscript has yet to be turned in. At least we know for a fact that it's coming.

I've just devoured the next two. I think I should slow down, maybe.
There are some bits of the series i don't like, but it has a killer plot and is ridiculously fast paced. Definitely a change from MBotF (which is of course very good in its own way)

Judith Kerr, author of The Mog books and The Tiger Who Came To Tea has died aged 95. Very sad to hear, she was one of my daughters favourite authors.

Finished the Belgariad. Absolutely loved these books and would recommend them to anyone, young or old. The story is easily digestible and so basic in its premise that it feels like an origin point of any book based on farmboys and prophecies (I'm sure plenty came before).

Also finished Sissel-Jo Gazan's The Dinosaur's Feather. I almost skipped this book but when I picked it back up, it really got going and ended most satisfying.

The mystery murder plot seemed oddly sidetracked by the lives of the characters though. It was the mysteries of family history that seemed to take precedent.

Not sure I would recommend this to anyone but somebody interested in scientific debate. Mezla might like this. Maybe.

On to Tigana. The Tigananing has begun.

I just finished Guy Gavriel Kay's new book, a Brightness Long Ago. It was like meeting an old friend I hadn't seen in a long time. Kay is an artist unlike any other within the genre, and though the he gets a little indulgent here and there, he tells a beautiful story. I genuinely teared up at a point, to my girlfriend's great amusement. This book was such a pleasure, and I recommend it without caveat. 8 out of 8 weeping Morgoths.

Not as many as you might think. Eddings didn't start the trend, but his was one of the first 'ten volume mega fantasy epics' that set the stage for much of what followed through the 80s and 90s.

And Silk still rocks. Glad to hear you enjoyed.

Glad to hear it!

He was at a library event like a week ago all of ten minutes walk from my house, and I had planned on going but it was MISERABLE out and I decided against it...but ever since I've been kicking myself. I mean he lives here, so it's not exactly a huge deal that he was here at an event...but it would have been nice to meet him and shake his hand and thank him for his books.

Oh well, next time.

Finished Caitlin R. Kiernan's The Dinosaur Tourist last night. Soooo good. I have two more of her collections, so those are probably going to get read next.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

If I’m being honest I’m not expecting him to come out on the BK side of it. However at the least even if he is wrong I’m hoping he can recognize the prose GGK has to offer. I can’t wait to read my 2nd book Lions at some point in the future and fuck BAM again for not carrying his books.

I can only imagine how impressed you'll be once you get to the REALLY good GGK books. "Lions" was one of the weaker works, imho. Miles ahead of Tigana though, obv.

I finally finished book 2 of the Starfish trilo in my commute omnibus. This one was pure spy thriller in the same space opera-y setting. Can't wait to see where the last book goes.
Racing's been super-slow, cuz life is generally hectic, and work can be so exhausting that sometimes I just zone out on commute home instead of reading.

At home, never got first paragraph of "Shantaram" yet... cuz at home things have been even more hectic.

After this weekend, hopefully things should settle a bit.

I read the first two chapters of Tigana yesterday.

Reading the prologue and the first chapter I realized I've actually read this before! But not chapter two so I must have read an excerpt or something.

It's perfectly fine so far. I like the political speculation about the powers that be. Curious about the magic in this book. The Sorcerer's sound all powerful.

Holy shit people Tiamat's Wrath is utterly mindblowing.

I am at chapter 22 and the sheer scope of events is just shocking.

Between the reactions of you and Abyss I'm now dropping my current transit book and starting this today.

Without spoilers, are we talking the big event of Babylon's Ashes level of shocking?
