Also read Patrick Ness' "And the Ocean was our Sky". An excellent book. Been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. You should check this book out.

And the Ocean was our Sky is an illustrated young adult fantasy book that subverts the classic story of Moby Dick. It's told by a whale named Bathsheba who was once a young sailor who went on a hunting trip to kill the legendary Toby Wick and destroy the White Ship that terrorises the Civilization of the Whales.

It's relatively simple but fun read. The whales have evolved to build their own cities and emulate human beings whom they hunt for ressources. To them our sky is an abyss and the depths of the sea is their sky. It's a kind of creativity that I wish we saw more of in our fantasy.

It also has excellent illustrations and overall it's very well designed book.

This. Sounds. Amazing.

It is. It's not some clever take down of Moby Dick, it's just a good book inspired by a classic story.

The best thing about it is that it's relatively short. Minus the illustrations it's a but over a hundred pages. It doesn't waste pages, it simply focuses on the story.

I am intrigued.

I'm skeptical. I'm not seeing how, in terms of the whole physics of the world involved, an "ocean" (presumably liquid saltwater) could be the "sky" (presumably a gaseous atmosphere) without breaking several laws of physics. Destroying my suspension of disbelief already and I haven't even started -- not a good sign.

It's more a question of whale perception than actual physics. They think upside down. Your brain will get confused once in a while when the whale talks about the surface.

This Patrick Ness book has been on my TBR forever. Guess I will take a look at it.

Has anyone here read all the Incryptid books by Seanan McGuire?

I finished David Eddings 8th Belgarion book. Two to go, the big showdown against Torak nears.

I love these books. There's something basic and pure about the story and characters that makes the reading so much more enjoyable. I suspect I'll want to read the Malerion or what ever it's called sooner rather than later.

In contrast I'm five chapters into the fourth Book of the New Sun and once again I find myself baffled by what people like about this series and why Gene Wolfe is praised for it. It's so disjointed and rambling.

I'm going to finish this series or die trying but it feels like a chore.

Finished up Anarch which was a wonderful ending to a good series which has varied a bit along the way but ends strong with glorious moments of tragedy, redemption and badassery. The 40k world is what it is but Gaunts Ghosts is clearly in a league of its own when it comes to this world, got Abnetts Eishorn books in the hope that they are comparable in quality and added to the to read pile.

Started Tiamat's Wrath it wasn't very awesome until the badguys started being extinction level stupid. At the same time it is a bit farfetched that the idiots in charge would be that poke god in the eye stupid but maybe they got a plan :apt2:.

Sorry, not quite sure if you've read through Gaunts Ghosts but, I think, Eisenhorn sets up Gaunts Ghosts a mite better than the other way around. But that's me. Both are cracking good in the context of the 40K universe.

I finished Bloody Rose by Eames. He's getting better as a writer and I'd love to see what he does with a series that isn't a quarter rock/pop music references. It's better than Kings by a wide margin.

9/10 while Kings was a 7/10.
