Library at Mount Char is a singular phenomenon. I have yet to come across anything that is quite like it, especially that ending. It takes a lot of guts to write an ending like that.

Which part of the ending are your referring to?

Have they aged well? Not at all. Is it the perfect sort of shallow nonsense I need when I don't want my brain to have to work hard? You betcha.

I've re-read them a few times and they hold up for this very purpose indeed! Book 2 (as BK mentioned is his "car/waiting" read) is easily my fave.

On my end, finished AGE OF LEGEND, which (as explained by Sullivan) ended on a heck of a cliffhanger! It was an excellent book, and as enjoyable as the previous volumes...but it's clearly building to something even better than the first 3 did, and it SOUNDS like the next book will be out before the end of the year too!

Started on a trilogy of cheapie eBooks by John Drake, 18th century naval/ne'erdowell book FLETCHER'S FORTUNE. Kind of Sharpe-like so far...not entirely sure I'm into it yet, but it's early days. It's not put me off for any real reason yet, so we will see.

Took another look — Age of Legend is still not available on the High Seas.

I'm gonna take a break from the Book of New Sun

Lol, literally the next sentence you read in the series he'll be in Thrax.

It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Aye, I am reading the Sword of the Lictor now.

I don't like these books at all. Wolfe is writing about all kinds of inconsequential things and all I want to know about is the cacogens and the Lovecraftian sea monsters and space travelling robots and God Kings but instead I get stories about Severian going sightseeing, being an unfaithful dick and Severian travelling with a kid for chapters.

Ugh, can't we just have a chapter with Severian torturing somebody to death instead? Is that so much to ask for???

Finished "Ecko rising" . Looked it up, there's a trilogy apparently and mmpbs are sold out. Might order the other 2 books in the summer, the ending kinda hooked me.

For my next commute read I'll go for Swainston's 3rd book.

"Blood Meridian" is slow going, (mostly cause I'm gaming whenever I'm home), but still putting it at least a chapter a day. Pretty language, that's for sure.

For the other Dragonlance Brain Candy fans in the thread - what are the War of Souls and Twins trilogies like, compared with Chronicles?

I *think* I've read War of Souls because the story is vaguely familiar, but I can't remember much about it. Never tried the Twins books though.

I *think* I've read War of Souls because the story is vaguely familiar, but I can't remember much about it. Never tried the Twins books though.

I've read about 80% of the Dragonlance universe novels, but it's been about 10-15 years, except for a couple re-reads of some, so I don't remember everything just a sort of nebulous feeling about how good each series was. Anything Weis & Hickman is worth reading in the series, though I'd argue their Deathgate Cycle is better than the Dragonlance work from what I remember. Darksword & Rose of the Prophet were equally engaging on a similar level (not too intense, but classic Fantasy warm and fuzzy vibes) But Dragonlance wise...

I'd say Twins/Legends trilogies is on par if not better than the original chronicles. War of Souls would be a close second, along with the Second Generation/Dragons of Summer Flame bridging books. The Lost Chronicles start-off OK but taper off at the end. The two Raistlin Chronicles are worth reading too.

Other noteworthy series (in order of best to worst IMHO) are: Dark Disciple, Dhamon/Dragons of a New Age, Anvil of Time, Minotaur Wars, & Rise of Solamnia (just cause gunpowder in the Dragonlance universe is cool)

Heroes & Preludes are decent for backstory/worldbuilding reasons, but even back when I was young I didn't love the writing as much, so I can't imagine they stand up well now, except maybe for Legend of Huma.

Weis&Hickman fanboy over and out.

The Twins books are cool because they are time travel books to pre-Cataclysm Krynn. So it's kind of like being able to see the 1st or 2nd Age of Middle-Earth in full novel-prose form (and not Silmarillion form), and you get to see/exprience a lot of the "legends" stuff you heard about in Chronicles that is history. You also get Tas going along with them. But they are VERY heavy Rasitlin/Cam books at the same time, so you don't have the wider open cast you know. I liked them, but Chronicles is better. They do benefit from being about time travel though. ;)

War of the Souls however was a whole different kettle of fish. I REALLY liked it, but it's very much a late-Age trilogy...and it's not exactly reinventing the wheel either...but it has some quite a few likeable new characters, and some really cool set pieces.

Funnily enough, I read WAR before I ever read Chronicles and Legends (Twins), so they may have resonated with me better because I'd not yet read the more well-known and loved Dragonlance books?

I think both trilogies are worth dipping into, but if the first book in each isn't to your liking, bail...as they won't get different as you go along.

Funnily enough the only book in the Dragonlance series that REALLY didn't land for me was DRAGONS OF THE SUMMER FLAME...

This reminds me I need to read the LOST Chronicles still....

Finished Inheritance Omni. Took me 73 days to complete. I really want Dreamblood right now.

Big thanks to Morgoth for pushing Inheritance on me. As I said I had issues with stuff but loved other stuff. The novella was pretty fantastic imo. I'm now going to go read PG's tag that I decided to skip.

If the weather calms down(I hate spring storms, they so violent!) then I ll probably load my son up and go get Dreamblood tonight. You did say that was good to right Morgoth?

I quite enjoyed them. Not as good as her latest trilogy, but it definitely grabbed me.

The Twins triology (Is the official trilogy name Legends?), is the sequel to Chronicles. As QT said, it focused on Raist and Cam. I enjoyed it.

The War of Souls, I never read the trilogy, but it looks like it comes after: The Second Generation, The Dragons of Summer Flame, and The Dragons of a New Age (also books I haven't read).

Takes place 50 years post-War Of the Lance I think.

And this convo has made me pull out DRAGONS OF A FALLEN SUN for a re-read of the trilogy. LOL! Thanks TRB!

Gave up on the book I was reading called "Tavern" as it was just a bit too bland and generic.

Started a reread of The Library at Mount Char instead. It's been a while and the talk of it has had inspired me to read it again. I'm guessing it holds up well a second time.
