I'm now only 2 books away from completing my arbitrary yearly Goodreads challenge of 60 books. Once I've cleared that arbitrary line I'll probably dig into a couple of doorstoppers I've been putting off.

Finished Death of Dulgath.

What started off as an entertaining read became very very creepy at the end.

Finished Wooding's new The Ember Blade. Fairly standard fantasy. Its no Ketty Jay though.

I still can't get back to reading paperbacks. At this stage I feel like it's not going to happen. My despair is too great.

Yep, I read it. Oh, I thought you meany you didn't like it. But yes, super creepy in that regard. Still a solid book. LOVE the monastery scene that ties into the First Empire books!

The next one is less dark (THE DISAPPEARANCE OF WINTER'S DAUGHTER) I think you'll find.

On my reading front, the audio for HIGH KING'S TOMB took a while to get going, but about 2 hours in it's started REALLY rollicking along, and I'm getting way more about new Green Riders, and way more about the Wall and its Guardians. Just waiting for more in depth Eletian stuff that seems to be in the offing. It's also nice at the 3rd book to listen to the audio for this series and get pronunciations of places and names. Anyways, great audiobook choice so far.

Nearly finished with the Ember Blade myself and it feels like by the numbers fantasy, no playfulness or wonder that was present in Ketty Jay. In large part I think the problem is having the same old chosen one being the main character when more or less every other character around is more interesting. There is some hope for the book in the mystical and historical parts being alluded to but we don't really get to them in this book.

Aren is a horrible central protagonist. He is every male coming-of-age character ever. Eragon was interesting than him, he could talk to dragons!Frankly I would have preferred a covert industrial revolutionary movement by Mara. I really related to her.

I'd be interested to read Mara's mastermind revolution or Garricks despair fueled revenge or Grubs quest to steal his way to redemption or even the Sard bards quest to find out what the hell happened to her family. I'm decidedly not interested to se another coming-of-age nonentity go on a quest for another holy/magic sword.

"Mistborn: The Secret History" actually straight up info_dumps the big picture for the first time basically. Interesting.

VERY. It's a fun read and well executed considering who the main character is and how that could have been contrived.
And the hints at the bigger picture and what Brandon could ultimately pull off with his Cosmere related work is pretty awesome.

I read 84K, Claire North's latest. It's certainly a more approachable book, style-wise at least, than The End of the Day (though I recently re-read that after we briefly mentioned it on here and it's grown on me), being something with a concrete plot and that. Some people might find she still leans too hard on some stylistic embellishments she's developed - parts of story told in fragmented sentences and all that- but
It's also really fucking depressing. As the title indicates it's clearly inspired by 1984, though beyond being a dystopia it's not similar to that book at all, and it leans fully into its dystopianism.

Recommended, though it's a different sort of book than the ones that will have gotten most people into North/Webb, and those expecting the joy those had won't find it here.


Then I've launched into A Winter's Promise, the first of the Mirror Visitor sequence, a French YA series by Christelle Dabos, and so far I'm finding it an absolute delight, totally and completely charming.

Finished "White Sand" in Arcanum yest. The world of the sandmasters sounds neat, but the graphic novel format didn't work for me. My eyes get confused jumping between panels and speech bubbles all over the page. Just not my thing, I guess.

Interesting. I've really grown to love Claire North recently so I plan to read this at some point anyway but this has intrigued me.

Sethanon is a fun read too. After reading sethanon I recommend the following course of action:
The Empire Trilogy (co written with Janny wurts) then read the Novella Honoured Enemy (if you don't like this book you are dead inside)
After that I'd say get a chronological list out and work your way to Rage of a Demon king (omitting the dreadful Jimmy the Hand novellas) and then stop unless you're really invested in midkemia and are a bit of a completionist

Read Clash of Eagles by Alan Smale. Not bad. Roman Empire survives through to 1200s and sends a legion across the Atlantic where they end up going from Chesapeake to the Mississippi. Shenanigans occur.

Seven native American tribes out of ten.

Just started the next one, Eagle in Exile. I like the pace and the straight prose style.

EDIT: also picked up something about first contact - Rejoice something something, by some guy named Ericsson I think.
