Loved the first book. Hated the second. Couldn't be bothered to finish the third.

The problem I had was that I loved the first story focused on and seen through the eyes of the cheeky little girl. Her young age and her charming innocent insolence made for a thoroughly delightful adventure book.

Then they shifted to that boy in the second book and I just didn't give a shit. I didn't want our world injected into their world. There was no need for that and I didn't care about the story. I wanted more adventures with the girl.

While I found the premise of the third book fascinating I just couldn't muster the energy to care enough to read more than half of it.

About 75% thru the PRINCE OF FOOLS earbook and loving it. Jalan is great, Snorri is fucking epicness embodied. Coming off the tepid Hope and Red, this was a real treat and it will be hard not to jump directly into bk 2 due to DEADHOUSE LANDING and OATHBREAKER both hitting shortly.


In ebook, Ketty Jay bk4 ACE OF SKULLS is still everything i always liked about these characters. Wooding gets what makes fun fantasy lit work.

About halfway into Temeraire 3: Black Powder War. Pretty funny.

Also reading James Bennett's Chasing Embers. May drop this. Very badly written.

Finished Hanging Tree. So so good.

What I have genuinely loved in this series is how the characters have evolved.

Peter has become so much more confident and knowledgeable. He now commands some respect on his own.

But what I really love is Nightingale. From a rather laid back character in the first 3 books, he has not proceeded to become an utter badass.

Ever since his battle with Varvara he has shown that the Tiger killer of Ettisberg is still very much there, and now Nightingale is like a brooding menace on the horizon - the big guns that Peter gets to call in. I love how the Faceless man was sporting some damage from their battle which Nightingale fought on enemy turf, but Nightingale just took it in his stride. I hope he does not die. He is an essential part of the world and his polished, assured self-confidence anchors the books.

Looking forward to more.

Finishing up the last bit of The Fall of Dragons and while I found the last book slightly less awesome then the rest this one is damned good and pretty damned grim. A lot of characters the reader have followed for a long time do not get a happy ending. The only annoyance is one that really follows the series all the way names for things and technical terms that probably where explained two or three books ago that I have no clue what they mean by now, really such things should be explained the first time they appear in every book at least with a sentence. All in all this is one of the most awesome fantasy series I've read.

Also nearly done with Dark Transformation 3 and while it is going slow it is getting pretty good.

Keep in mind, you're gonna finish the entire series before I'm done with the first book.

I read The Golden Compass books many years ago, probably when they first came out. It's where I first learned about trepanation.

Amen! The Waldenbooks was the only book store in my town, before its untimely bankruptcy. I loved going in there when I was younger. Whenever my parents would ask me where I wanted to go on my birthday, "Waldenbooks!"

P.S. the closest book store to my house is now a 20 minute drive away (aside from a little, niche, overpriced indie store that mainly caters to stay-at-home trophy wives, so it doesn't count). It's depressing.

Finished Ruthanna Emrys' Winter Tide last night. Very much the first of a trilogy, so there was less closure than I'd usually like, though it also clearly and cleanly wrapped up a chapter in the life of Aphra (the main character.) I do love how Emrys digs into the Lovecraft lore, utilizing the Deep Ones, K'n-yanians, and the Yith very nicely, but still keeping it a very human story. Great stuff. If you haven't read this yet, it includes the short story "The Litany of Earth" that came first and is referenced in the novel. (At least, it was included in my Kindle edition.) I do recommend starting there.
