Wrapped up "Liar's Key". fun book, good laughs, strong pacing, decent plot in a settign that continues to be interesting, and characters that don't annoy me like Jorg did. Will be reading the last book once it hits mmpb.

next for the commute I'll read "Foul Tide's Turning", the second Far-Called book by Stephen Hunt.

At home, about a third into "Mirror Empire", already hunting round the City for an available copy of the sequel.

How is Stephen Hunt? I have been interested in his books for some time.

Finished Alastair Reynolds' Poseidon's Children trilogy.

This is a very interesting series. The scope and epciness expands with each book. The first book is quite small-scale for Reynolds, though it has a few of his markers. The last book is filled iwth classic Reynolds tropes.

Reading wise I quite liked book 1 even though it was slow. Book 2 was excellent. Book 3 has a slow middle but a pretty epic ending.

I am reading Ilona Andrews latest Innkeeper book and then I will go back to Janny Wurts.

On the Classics front, only 110 pages into Charles Dickens' Bleak House. Its all sunshine and laughter, which makes me profoundly uneasy.

The first novel had a VERY sloooow and trope-filled start. But once it got going, there's really neat character arcs, and plot developments. Basically, once one of the main characters stops dropping hints about his dark and troubled past and says who he was and starts acting. Unfortunately, up to that point (and it takes 100-odd pages), the pacing was slow and the whole thing seemed quite generic in the "idyllic village is raided by mutant airship pirates"-type of way. As always in such cases, I hesitate to recommend, since people's tolerance for slow, annoying set-up beginnings tends to vary.

Once you get through that, there's some really neat stuff. Nothing earth-shattering and super-epic, but a fun adventure tale.

I am quite used to slow starts by now - Curse of the Mistwraith, Dragonbone Chair, Ironship - so I don't think that will be a problem. Putting this on this years list then

BTW have you read anything by KJ Parker?

Tried the Engineer books. I think I finished one, don't think I ever managed volume 2. It did not work for me. I have a problem when a person spends a large portion of book or series talking a bout a genius plan that involves everyone doing what they expect based on their weaknesses, and nothing goes wrong. That, the pacing, and something else didn't work for me. I'm pretty sure those were some of the books I donated to my library this past summer.

I'd be interested in giving the author another shot, maybe, as I heard the Fencer books are supposed to be better, but I'm not in any hurry to do so.

Onto SAINTS BLOOD by De Castelle.

I haven't read any of his other series, but the standalone Parkers are so much better than Engineer. I also struggled to finish the first and put down the second there, but I've read several standalones and they're all really good. Much shorter, much better paced. Sharps is particularly good.

I have Spy who came in from the Cold from the library! Quite excited to read my first Le Carre.

Finished Ilona Andrews' One Fell Sweep. These light fun books are always very satisfying to read.

Started Wurts' Fugitive Prince.

Finished Saint's Blood; really enjoyed it but, while this is fantasy, I do require believability i.e. I'm fine with magic, saints, demons, monsters and whatnot walking the mortal realm but not okay with someone breaking their bones and then functioning as if everything is normal. I know a lot of books we read would have much different pacing: epic battle followed by 3 months of recovery. But, having been hurt a good deal in my life, I know the body requires time to heal.

In earbook, near the end of Lightbringer. I know I'm very late to the party but the first narrator was so bad I didn't make it more that 30 minutes in. It has since been redone with Simon Vance, and is now fantastic.

Also about 10 pages in to Chaos Quarter. Think this was a Polish recc so I'm expecting good things.

Already at 65/70% on the spy who came in from the cold

It's not breakneck pace or action in any shape or form, but it's very gripping, a page turner for sure

Yep. Huh, I don't know where the recc came from then. I'm barely 10 pages in so don't have much of an opinion. And I'm only reading a couple pages a night so I won't get through it with any sort of speed. Saint's Blood took a couple months. But, as soon as I form an opinion, I'll post it.

Finished the Black Prism and moved on to A Closed and Common Orbit, sequel to A Long Way to an Angry Planet which I know Polish recc'd.

Finished up The Fair Rebel and wasn't really surprised that I loved it.

Whatever I read next needs to be fun and light or pale in comparison so either the Liar's Key or the Hanging Tree...its a toss up.

Finished The Tamuli. It was enjoyable enough but suffered due to Sparhawk carrying a Mario invincibility star around with him. Not one of the main cast was ever in any actual danger.

I started Mage's Blood. So far there are a few things that have thrown me - the main character is called Gurvon Gyle, which is uncomfortably close to Gavin Guile, the magic system is called the gnosis (where have I heard that before I wonder), and we have also had a very obvious jeebis analogy.

The writing is solid enough at least so I'll at least give it a chance.

Love this book. Really wish Reynolds would make some more standalones like it. Even Century Rain, which a lot of people dislike, I enjoyed.

I really really need to get back to Reynolds. I have his first six or more books in the TRP, but after enjoying the hell out of REVELATION SPACE, CHASM CITY just lost me.
Likely need a REV reread before moving on to ARK tho'. That book was dense.

You could go straight to Ark without reading City. I did, and it was fine.
