Wurts is next up on my list, I haven't begun yet, but when I do, it'll be a couple weeks to finish the whole as I read at a pace similar to you.

I'm going to skip all of the Sanderson because I just can't vibe with his stuff - except when he works darker, which he won't do for Way of Kings or Mistborn.

I don't actually plan to binge the entire series right now. I have stopped at Vastmark. Now I will read and finish Stone of Farewell, possibly read the second Iron Ship book by KM Mckinley - (I have a very good feeling about this series) and then finish off Alastair Reynolds Poseidon's Children series. Then I will return to Wars of Light and Shadow.

But, the series is very good. There is some very solid character work, excellent world-building, and lots of plotlines. I can feel the long term setup.

Its just that its written so very differently. The prose is ornate, the emotions are heightened - its unlike any other series I have read

Very true. I liked it, but I was challenged by it, and it took a while to get through (although Vastmark was a much easier read than the first 2)

I finished K.M. McKinley's The City of Ice. Indeed an improvement on the first one in terms of things happening and actually having a proper finale, though there's still some odd pacing choices. Has some really nice ideas and moments, and as I said about the first one McKinley (to answer Andorion's question earlier, apparently she's a she) has a great sense of place, something that I really enjoy, and she's added more drama and tension to that in this book. Worth a look but it is one that's very much going to be judged by the finished series.


Then I read Elizabeth Bear's Hammered, the first of the Jenny Casey trilogy, because someone mentioned it before and I realised it's one of the few Bear books still remaining on my clean-up of her oeuvre. As per for Bear, it's really really good. Cyberpunk fans will enjoy it.


Now I'm reading Red Tide, the third of Marc Turner's Chronicles of the Exile books. It continues to be achingly Malazan, but the author appears to also be continually improving. The dash-to-convergence is almost eye-rolling in its obviousness (one character keeps drawing attention to it, for starters), but I am nonetheless eager to see how the particular convergence he's setting up now plays out, given how well the one in book 2 went.

The Jenny Casey pusher was probably me. Glad you like it. I'm also reading Red Tide now. It's improved on the duller stretches of Dragon Hunters by a wide margin and the pieces cohere better with all the establishing work done in the previous two books.

Nah, it was someone who read it on your rec though so you're ultimately responsible. Cheers. Although of course I'd have read it eventually anyway, since Bear is one of my favourite authors.

And yeah, it's got the pacing together a bit better than the other two so far. I hope the finale is as good or better than Dragon Hunters, though, because the second half of that book was top banana.

I'm about two-thirds of the way through The Tamuli now. Everyone is becoming extremely overpowered; I think we're able to see where Eddings went into his twilight from here. It's enjoyable enough, though.

So I'm actually current on this one, and you guys have no idea how much fucking awesome is in your future. This series is the only one that I've ever read that gets to par with tMBotF in emotional impact. In fact I think it actually surpasses it.

Ando, you picked a good point to pause since Fugitive Prince starts the third and longest arc of the series.

Actually, would you be willing to start a read-along thread like you did for WoT when you pick it back up? It's been years since I've really had someone to talk about this series with.

Tiamak? Yeah, he's actually awesome. He's led by his own religious-tribe's sensibilities...so he initially makes some STRANGE choices as a result of the local wildlife. His story improves as it goes along (and pretty soon I think IIRC).
