Eh, it sounds decent enough but being that I am such a card-carrying Crusades fan, and especially focusing on the Knight's Templar...turning them into a bunch of highway protectors would probably only piss me off.

Aside from that I don't care much for truckers, the south, or road movies...so this might be not up my alley. I'll sample it on kindle at some point though, thanks for the heads up.

So today on my commute I read the entirety of:

The first volume of Warren Ellis' serialised prose release Normal. Intriguing start, but at fifty pages it's kind of hard to say anything about it yet.


Ndeni Okorafor's Binti. It's an intriguing little tale but it honestly feels like she could have made a whole novel out of it with ideas to spare. The novella frame requires some incredibly quick emotional turnarounds that undermine it.



Persona by Genevieve Valentine. It's a near-future political thriller about celebrity diplomats, paparazzi, and spy games. It's kind of a hard sell by the premise but it's really very good. Entirely different from the previous book I read by her, Mechanique- not only a completely different, much less weird setting but much less showy prose to match it- but she nails the tone and tension. An author to watch and I'll be reading the sequel.

Dresden is the tip top pinnacle of Urban Fantasy for most of us. You won't find more people who love it than you will here. Go read them!

I think the Peter Grant series starts out stronger than Dresden Files did. Certainly far more charming.

However by book 3 and 4 the Dresden Files series is in a league of its own.

If you read the Dresden Files, just remember that series has been running for a long time. The first two books are very generic and the series was still trying to find its footing.

You have enuf in your TRP that you don't me convincing you of anything, BUT...

It's respectful of the Crusades element, which is a minor part of the background in any event, and the truckers are only one element of about five different threads in the story.

It's like Belcher took concepts from HANNIBAL, SONS OF ANARCHY, FRINGE, X-FILES, WAYWARD PINES, BUBBA HO-TEP, FINAL DESTINATION and a dose of Lovecraft, and then had fun with it.

It's not Dresdencrack, or even coKate, but it's damn fun and a fast read.

I think you'll enjoy. I agree with QT and Apt above. I think PETER GRANT is a great series. DRESDEN is more high energy cinematic. I read and enjoy a Grant book, I stay up til 4am finishing a Dresden book and then say fuckit and stay up til 6am rereading large chunks of it and posting incoherent raving HOLY FUCK DID I JUST READ THAT!!!????!!!! comments elsethread.

Aaronovich at RIVERS was a better writer than Butcher was at STORM FRONT, but Butcher will hold your attention, 2 and 3 are progressively better, and by book 4, well, you'll understand why it's nicknamed 'the dresdencrack'.

I've finally found the wherewithal to start in on Stand On Zanzibar again. I stopped about 250 pages in a few months ago due to finding it a bit meandering and incomprehensible. But, coming back to it now, it seems to have cohered while in my subconscious and I'm enjoying it more, especially Brunner's prescient bits.

I'd like to be Chad Mulligan. He's a pretty on-the-mark guy.

I'm with QT on this one since we already have the coCaine. Kate is her own special drug.

So I ripped through the third Saxon book LORDS OF THE NORTH. I found myself listening every chance I had once I realized this one was going to push Uhtred's plans over Alfred's. The change of narrator was a little jarring at first, but I think it's mostly because Jonathan Keeble set a high bar to try to follow. I know Keeble is back for book four but then it swaps up permanently again.

Finishing that means I've started IRON COUNCIL. I'm through part one now, and a good chunk into part two. It's integrating to see how some of the side characters from PSS have become legendary revolutionaries.
