Its been way too long since I read Dune. That and the Hyperion Cantos are things i really need a refresher on

Finished reading the Belgariad. Got to admit I flipping loved it! Yes it was terribly cheesy, filled with bad dialogue and casual sexism/racism but it was very enjoyable! The battles towards the end of Enchanters End Game were superbly written! I feel like I might have to read the Mallorean now...

I read the whole cantos in one go, but in translation. I recall actually liking the Endymion duology as well, but I really don't remember much beyond Shrike.
At the time I read borrowed books. One of these days i'll have to plan for a day trip to the toronto's Russian district to find a single-volume collection for the Cantos, and for the 6 original Dune books. (as well as Perumov' latest Godsdoom-2 volumes, and a few othe things on my to read list)

I read them too. I came in with the tv show (which I thoroughly enjoy and am excited for S2) and the first 4 books were on sale together (new covers were coming so they were getting rid of old stock), so I've read books 1 and 2. I find they are really solid little looks at history and war and politics ect. of the era, while being a compelling character-driven drama. The first and second book suffer from some dry portions, but I feel the overall story was worth the effort.

Also, the time jumping creates some fun and interesting plotlines. I hear tell the latter books in the series begin to draw things out too much, but the first 6 or so are solid.

If you are truly curious, give the 1st season of the show a watch. It's well made, scripted, and acted.

Meanwhile, about halfway into Moorcock's Cure for Cancer. Extremely confusing but also quite entertaining. His postapocalyptic scenarios are either extremely funny or not all that implausible

The confusion doesn't wear off until close to the end (of the Quartet). But all of his social commentary is SCARY spot on (for all his works- "Winds of Limbo" / "fireclown" was probably the most explicit about it, but "Nomad in the Time Streams" also does "alternative history and the human condition" really well)

It is certainly that (so far, I've not had the time travel explained to me, but I'm pretty sure it's magic portal fantasy...just not a fantasy series).

But honestly, if you can ignore that factor and see the history and politics at play, it's quite well done.

I'm 125 pages into "The Revolution Trade", and the first transdimensional nuke has gone off.

So far, the plotting and the tension is thicker than a well-aged piece of Swiss cheese.

I totally forgave Stross the lacklustre volume 2. This series is awesome.

As punishment, if you haven't already, you have to get cracking with Miles Cameron's The Red Knight series.

I say this because I'm approaching the end of the third book and it's awesome. Approaches things in a different way, and hasn't quite reached the level yet, but a lot of the things I like about it are things I also like about Malazan.
