EDIT: Jeeze, the paperback is $14.73 on Amazon!? That's a bit loony.

?? That's pretty standard TPB pricing. But you can get it as low as $7.50 (new, shipped) through the other sellers.

Finished Downward to the Earth last night. I had figured out the "mystery" pretty early on, and the ending went a little mystical. But on the whole it was really good.

$15 is what I was paying for hardbacks not 2 years ago. Trades are usually around $9-11 in my experience.

I lament the death of the mass market paperback.

Where do you get your books? Hardcovers have been retailing for $30 for at least five years now. Even with Amazon's discounts a hardcover will still run you $20.

Shoot, I just dug through my Amazon order history, and I bought two new TPBs back in 2000 that cost $13 and $17.

Book prices in Canadaland took a hike with the falling dollar. mmpb are now around 12, pushing 14 sometimes.

Also, a few of the books on my "to purchase" list are no longer sold @ book depository. And shipping from anywhere is likely to be brutal.

I may have to start investing into ebooks...

Usually Amazon. Maybe I'm just compressing more recent history and am stuck in the past. The figures I quoted were off the top of my head, and not hard data, so could very likely be wrong.

Yeah, it's a consideration. My grandparents each have one, and I got my mom a Kobo for her last birthday.

Main thing stopping me is that it'd primarily used for the commute, and I have a bad history with handling precious and fragile things. They tend to get damaged or broken ©

From another commute reader, ebooks are way easier if you are on the move a lot. I once finished an entire Dresden reread solely on my Subway commutes. Plus if you have to spend a lot of time waiting on other people, then an ereader is really convenient as you can just whip it out and read.

Yep. And an ereader or cheapish tablet needn't run you big bucks.Throw a decent case and some ghost armor on if you're worried and you're gtg.

Also make sure you research Ocular Implants as this will mean the Ghost has +2 sight and won't be caught in the blast radius of a nuclear strike.

Agree with all the things said above. For commute reading, I use mainly my phone now - so much easier to just pull it out and start reading instead of having to hustle with a paper book on a busy train. And you can read anywhere. And have, like, twenty books on you all at once. I used to be a 'dead tree only' person, but now anything that's not an instant buy (like Malazan) or doesn't contain lots of pictures (like comics) happens in ebook format.

You can keep them. I converted for the convenience of eBooks. If the topic comes up, I chime in. Doesn't hurt my feelings if someone prefers a physical book.

I've even used Caliber to convert the format of my eBooks so I can open them in a 3rd party e reader on my phone and use text to speech plugins to listen to my books while I cut the lawn. Sure, it sounds like a female Steven Hawking reading to me, but sometimes I just don't want to listen to music for 2.5 hours.
