When The Lighthouse Keepers attack Kate and Derek at Saiman's place, then Kate heads home to the office knowing they'll go there too...and finds the wild Render lynx chick has come while Andrea is away with Aunt B and attacks them, kills the older shifter and though Ascanio is able to shift and hold her off by going in the Loup cage with Julie...she's already bitten...and then when all hope is pretty much lost Curran shows up and takes out everyone left...I think I may have cheered. That and Ascanio's sacrifice to save Julie was damned fine stuff from someone who spends so much of the early book being so petulant and childish.

That whole sequence just all around impressed me.

Huh I do believe I had forgotten this sequence. Clearly time for a reread. This is why I shouldnt set reading goals. I just get bogged down in rereads.

I finished The Quantum Thief this morning. Overall, I thought the book was ok. Nothing groundbreaking, but enjoyable all the same. I plan on grabbing book 2 someone in the future. As for now, I'm starting Vandermeer's City of Saints and Madmen like I discussed with Baco and PG elsethread.

I have mixed emotions. I've just finished the second, The Magician King, and I'm not disappointed. The first book I couldn't put down but was left with mixed emotions. Then the second I was left in the same state. The story was good, but I think it's just that I don't like Quentin or if I do I feel hard done by.

What I like about book one is the journey and the scene in Embers Tomb.

What I like about book two is that the story starts with a blank page and you don't know where it's going.

Would you recommend this third book? Is it better or worse than the first two?

Back into Sword of Shadows with A SWORD FROM RED ICE, and the gauntcrack with HIS LAST COMMAND. Re: the latter, Abnett is great, but he does occasionally skip over fairly important events. This is probably his way of getting the book out, and I can appreciate that. But I can't help but feel the lack of what he skips over.

There is more Ember/Umber in the third. It's worth finishing the series and Quentin is much easier to work with in the third book bc the events of the first and second have worn his assholish behaviors mostly away. He's also working with someone new too.

Finished Katestasy Book 5 (you're right Andorion, the ending is a bit different than what came before). AKA no action packed third act. Still, much enjoyed, just a more introspective ending...felt like it was setting up a lot that will come down the line later.

Taking a mini break to read the graphic novels "Y: The Last Man" very cool story about all males (human and animal) die except one guy and his monkey. Only a bit of a way into the first volume but it looks good. Seems like it might have a lot to say about gender issues and feminism amongst other things. Should be interesting.

Read IRINDAI by Bradley P. Beaulieu, which is a short fiction piece which takes place in the world (and featuring the protagonist) of his new "Shattered Sands" series (first book not out yet), and it was wonderful! A functionally realized Arabic/Middle eastern type fantasy world full of intrigue, and great world-building nods. The lead character, a 15-year old pit fighter girl, who's name is Ceda is a great character to be inside the head of for the story. It was just really refreshing fiction, and now I can't wait to read the first full book.

I just finished Only Revolutions by Mark Z Danielewski. I give it a 3/5. It was a very unique read that centers around a pair of sixteen year old lovers. Every 8 pages you can flip the book over and turn to the corresponding page to read the same section of story from the eyes of the other main character. My biggest problem was in the style he used. My fiance describes it best: "it's almost like beatnik poetry". I'm happy I challenged myself top read this, but I don't sees myself ever reading it again.

Next up is The Skull Throne by Peter V Brett for something much more straightforward. (Insert mandatory complaint about Renna here.)

I've now read half of Peter Clines' The Fold within the past 12 hours. I can't put it down. It feels a lot like a Michael Crichton book (in fact, it feels like it cribs pretty heavily from

) where it's a lot of sitting around and talking with a couple of shocks injected every few chapters. But the characters are great, and the mystery is just intriguing enough, and Clines writes so compellingly that you just don't want to stop. I had to put it down right at the end of Part II, which is (presumably) the Big Reveal, much of which I had more or less predicted, on account of needing to get some housework done. But man, more than anything I really just wanna run up to bed and flop down and keep on reading.
