Finished Rob Thurman's Madhouse. Halfway through Deathwish now and still loving it. Might actually be reread material, simply for the serious fun it is.

Finished off the Gap Cycle and the last two books are just pure greatness, probably the best political thrillerish thing that only happens to take place in the future ever.

Currently reading The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August and finding it delightful and really good but there are some techical aspects that bother on occation. Mostly however the story telling is good enough that I don't care to nitpick. Will mostly likely look for more of her stuff to read next.

I don't wanna pour cold water on your birthday present, but Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a book that displays no understanding of either Nazi Germany or children, and as such, should be approached with great caution. Read the other one.



The ending of Kingdom of Gods feels like Jemisin couldn't quite encompass in words what she had in her imagination, but I still really like the book as a whole, and the series. I love her take on a magic-saturated world and the strangeness of the characters that can go with that.

Regarding The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, I thought the movie was really good? I don't know a lot about books like these because nowadays I very rarely read 'serious' books. In fact that was the exact reason I got this gift! Anyway, it seems this book is going to irritate me a lot as I have read a lot of history on Germany and Hitler and the gaps are going to hit me square between the eyes. So thanks for the tip!

Jemisin's world is really interesting. The regular interactions with divinity give it a different flavour. In fact book 2 read a bit like Urban Fantasy to me. What I found interesting was that here the Gods are not really bound by the worship, worshipper thing and can ignore prayers and stuff.

Finished The Wurms of Blearmouth last night. Best B&KB so far. Just an absolute riot.

Decided to start in on James Enge's Morlock Ambrosius series next. 50 pages into Blood of Ambrose and it's not bad. But Morlock himself has only just shown up, so looking forward to it picking up.

Finished Matthew Reilly's The Great Zoo of China. Like all Reilly books I read this in a rush. Like all Reilly boks its totally crazy, utterly implausible, packed with impossible action sequences, and protagonists with godlike endurance/healing powers. You essentailly park your brain outside when you read. Like all Reilly books I enjoyed the hell out of it and cannot wait for when he writes something else.

2 chapters into Elantris. Is it just me or is there a difference between Elantris and the WoT books Sanderson wrote in terms of fluency and style? Elantris is not bad. But it doesn't seem to have the flow. I hope it gets better.

ELANTRIS was his first book, and it shows in the prose. It's not nearly as flowing and lovely as his latter work...BUT he tells a compelling and decent story and his characters are well crafted as ever. You just kind of have to trade off the first-timers prose for the rest of the book which is good.

Me, I'm 160 pages into Brian Staveley's PROVIDENCE OF FIRE, and It's good...not as good as the first so far...but the female lead )of the three leads) has WAY more to do in this book and she's easily the most interesting....so that's a plus.

I do find myself skimming as Staveley is not a less-is-more guy and I find he likes to explain things more than once. At this rate I'm unsure if this will tide me over till my trip week after next...may have to Marvel Meth it up to fill the gap.

By the end of it that book (and series so far) blew me away. It's one of my fave series, and I lucked out and met Sanderson and got him to sign my copy. there are threads in the Sanderson forum with most of our opinions fleshed out. EDIT: Watch out for spoilers though.

Me, I liked the book. It had some really great moments but I kind of felt like Brandon was holding back and trying not to drown us in this new world.

I thought the second book was incredible, one of my all time favorite books. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Idk if you read the PM yet but I brought that issue up. The exp he gained from E to WoT is mind boggling. Hang in there cause Elantris is a gem.

Finally finished "Pandora's Star". Yep, that certainly got intense towards the last third.

Going off my previous Hamilton experience, I'm now half-expecting the second book to be crazy-intense action the way the Neutronium Alchemist was.
Still need to buy Judas Unchained though. I think in the meanswhile I'll give "The Black Lung Captain" (Ketty Jay no 2) a spin as my commute reading book.

Infuckindeed!!! I told you it was a slow burn. The Prime intro made me so uncomfortable and had my skin crawling!! Hope you enjoy Judas as much as I did to.

I actually liked these two better than the ensuing Void trilogy. The Prime scenes are some of my favourites. I think Hamilton takes a decent stab at writing from an alien PoV.

I dont think the new book has any continuity with the Void books. In fact it seems to be set way before the Void books. Around 300 years, going by the timeline given in Dreaming Void.
