I'm nearing the end of Sethra Lavode. That last chapter hit me right in the feels in a way that hasn't happened to me in awhile. I've really enjoyed The Khaavren Romances, but I'm looking forward to jumping back into the Vlad books again soon.

Started Firefight today, sequel to Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. So far so good.

I ended up with missing issues of SECRET WARRIORS on my iPad downloaded from Marvel Meth so I had to get back into Jeff Vandermeer's AUTHORITY, and man I've been well and truly sucked back into this story. Loved the first book, and the second is shaping up to be even better! This is some crazy interesting stuff, and I heartily recco it to anyone who likes weird forbidden area mysteries and secretive government installations and assorted other crazy new-weird stuff. Love it! and I've got ACCEPTANCE ready to go away with me on vacation in early Feb!

I'm listening to the Golden Son during work hours and Foxglove Summer during off work hours. Both are really good so far. Also, I'm about 40% into Shotgun Arcana. It's really good but a bit dark and disturbing as well. Still, love the setting.

At the moment I am hovering between NK Jemisins trilogy and Guy Gavriel Kay. Jemisin is supposed to be a really talented new writer, while I have heard tons of good stuff about GGK.

Any tips?

I havent liked anything I've tried of Kays, but I know a lot of people on here are big fans of his work.
Jemisins trilogy, I read the first book of the trilogy and really didn't like it, one step short of a romance novel, some people have mentioned they like it, but I'd say Kay gets a lot more love

Threw in Firefight before finishing the Long Price Quartet and found it pretty nice light entertainment thought Sanderson is really in love with some of his ideas there was a better distance to them in this one.

Now back to The Prince of Spring...

What Macros said about NK Jemisins. About GGK he is a genius when he is good. Try out Under Heaven or Sailing to Sarantium its his work at its best. Some might recommend Tigana or the Fionavar Tapestry they are decidedly second rate when it comes to GGK and rather something one reads for completion after reading the actually good bits.

My not so humble opinion.

That's his absolute BEST. 100% hands down the fave of his books amongst a few on here myself and I think Abyss included. It was the book that got me hooked on Kay.

Lions of Al-Rassan is one of Kay's best works! Under Heaven, River of Stars and the Sarantine Mosaic are also very, very good.

I would say read Lions, and if you're taken by him, continue with the Sarantine Mosaic and then Under Heaven; all really really damn good However, there is very little magic in Kay's work.....actually, I'd say there is not really any magic, just mysticism and the like. Jemisin is really good as well. I didn't find the romanic edge overwhelming and where Kay is fantasy light, Jemisin is fantasy heavy. I've only listened to the first two but that's because the third isn't yet available on audio.

I have only Lions and the Sarantine duology, so guess I will start with Lions. May intersperse with Jemisin though. This trilogy does seem to divide people

Lions is three quarters one of the best books I've ever met, one quarter hot mess. Seriously, the step down in quality for the finale is fucking shocking, and almost all of it is down to Kay deciding to use one particular annoying narrative 'trick' not once, but repeatedly, even though it serves no good purpose.
It's still definitely worth reading, though Tigana and Under Heaven are his best.

I really like NK Jemisin. The first book in the trilogy is indeed a bit underwhelming but the series improves a great deal as it goes along.




Anyway, currently I'm reading Iron Night, the second Generation V novel. Continues on being a really good urban-fantasy kick - I have to say that if this book keeps up the quality to the finale, then at this stage I'm rating it at least on the level of Aaronovitch and Carey. Good stuff.
