Finally caught up on Sluggy.

And Lo!

It is Nifty.

Isn't it just?

If you haven't indulged yet, while very different, i find http://www.sinfest.net/ hits a similar level of consistency and humor.

I too feel like I should read the Void trilogy. Have read near enough everything else by him.

I feel like i should read something by him, but i'm almost... intimidated... by his volume of work to date. What's a good starting place?

Gone through The Dark Defile and while I enjoyed everything but the ending immensly, the ending was too open ended and far too few major plots where resolved. Not unexpected but underwhelming and unless whatever he writes next ties in (not unlikely I'd guess since most of his work so far seem to) with the series really leaves a bit much hanging while taking great care (and nr of pages) to reslove reasonably minor plots or go off on tangental plot lines.

S'funny... About 1/2 way and i'm enjoying it so much i've deliberately slowed down to draw out the read.

Did someone mention the Night's Dawn trilogy? Someone should...
It is easily his best work I have read and has an epic scope & vast sprawling feel to it that appeals to the Malazan fan in me. As well as a whole explorers/settlers on new planets like in Firefly thing that I love!

For reference, Night's Dawn = The Reality Dysfunction; The Neutronium Alchemist; The Naked God.

He has a standalone called Fallen Dragon but that is a bit rubbish. Misspent Youth is also rubbish but it does sort of explain bits in the Commonwealth Saga (is a prequel of sorts!), which is pretty good but still not as good as Night's Dawn.

I haven't read his earlier stuff or the Void trilogy (which is a sequel to the Commonwealth Saga but like a thousand years later or something) and his latest (which I believe is a standalone too) called The Great North Road.

Eeeehhh..... I really liked Sinfest till the author went off the rails on Feminism and basically changed the entire strip. Still dip back into it occasionally, but no signs of it changing back, so leave it be.

I'll stick with my Schlock binge for now.

Besides, I wanted something with a measure of plot.
meh. Link was dead :(

What you're saying, unless you've read them already, is you want one or both of Order of the Stick or Gunnerkrigg Court.

Not that they're much like Sluggy or Schlock, but they're rather brilliant.

Just started reading Bakker's the Darkness That Comes Before and I'm loving it so far!

Yeah, I'm getting Hamilton on that link too, albeit not at the cheap-cheap prices advertised by Serenity. Evidently a region thing.

Weird. When I click on the link the three books at the top of the list are Hamilton's Void Trilogy. What about if you go straight to the first book? http://www.amazon.co...ds=void+trilogy

ETA: It obviously is a regional/country thing, as I asked a friend in Finland to have a look and they're not getting the cheap prices, either. Apologies!

It goes to the correct book, but isn't on sale (Kindle shows $7.69 US).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I wonder if Amazon will apologise to me for making me look stoopid Posted Image After all, I'm more than capable of doing that on my own :)

On the plus side, I finished Gemmell's Lion of Macedon last night. Loved it, which is a relief as I'd just come off the back of a couple of books I didn't enjoy.

As it's horror month on another forum I frequent, I've started The Cormorant by Stephen Gregory. Shouldn't take too long, it's only 147 pages . . .

I will certainly get around to Night Dawn since I've loved Commonwealth so much this yr. it will be awhile before I pick em up though. I'm gonna try to not buy a book except Shadows of Apt 10 for the rest of the yr. I bought way to many this yr vs what I actually read.

Ed: place your bets motherfuckers lol

I will be interested to hear what you think because you read TCS first. :)

Abyss, just get the Night's Dawn already! I always seem to find them dead cheap in second hand book shops - I think I got the whole trilogy for about a fiver all told. Amazon marketplace is also your friend but it may be different in Canada.

2/3 through the Dark Defiles a.k.a. the Misadventures of the Dirty Mage. Really good if a bit much sometimes. Also starting Behemoth: Sepuku, the last rifter book. Also listening to the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, Matter, and starting Malice.

.........and still reading Ash.

Hahaha. It's a behemoth, isn't it.

I recently read The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels there, the second in Catherynne M. Valente's excellent series of Fairyland kid's books. It's all very old-fashioned (Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz are obvious inspirations) and a little bit formal in its presentation, but I really enjoy it.

Also having a go at Kameron Hurley's The Mirror Empire, but not really feeling it yet tbh. It's trying too hard to be different in the worldbuilding, I feel, and while I'm continuing on - and there's a lot to intrigue- I keep being distracted by other things.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Apt is the only one who reads this. Apt is nice.
