It's basically a book series that he wrote in response to a challenge by a fan that he could not write a story about any two things and make it great. He accepted the challenge and the fan said make it about the Roman Empire and Pokemon.

So that's what you'll be reading, and as BK might say the series is Fuckin' A.

As for me, I'm about 200 pages into THE DRAGONBONE CHAIR by Tad Williams, and it's really great so far. I'm actually a little annoyed with myself that I've not read this sooner. It's classic fantasy in every sense of the word. Love the world, and Williams makes it lush and realized with his extensive prose.

I have heard these things, (mainly in this thread somewhere), and I like Butcher which is what sold it for me. I tend to stick to Author's that have done me a service and grabbed my interest. Unless I see something that may be worth getting. The moment my family bought me a kindle (I've always had/bought books), I bought Caine. Within 10 minutes of opening it up. Mainly because of Abyys, and memory. I tried to get it a few times in Waterstone's or Amazon but it was not available. Totally worth the read.

I love the concept of an Actor. I watch movies now and imagine myself the main protagonist. That's Caine! Caine is such a likeable character and there is no way you should like him. You "should" hate him. Can anyone name a better character in any book? There's a challenge!

Just be prepared that Williams appears to do his pacing slowly. Lots of description, but nothing that I would think one might find annoying...more that he likes to set every scene.

Is it worth picking up? I didnt love the Tawny Man trilogy enough to make it a must read.

It's VERY slow. Like Glacially slow. There are aspects of it that I can't even relate Fitz from the first trilogy to Fitz now.

It's decent-ish.

It's certainly NOT worth hardcover/ebook Hardcover price if you weren't fussed with Tawny Man.

I'd say wait for MMP or low ebook price.

I have about 200 pages left in Shadowmarch. There are times I wish for a little more action, but the slow reveal of the world keeps my attention.

I would love to see Williams take a shot at a contemporary novel like Feist did with Faerie Tale.

If you loved Tawny Man I'd say it's definitely worth the cover price, I personally loved it. That said the book is largely set-up for the final 100 pages, where nearly everything of major note happens, but it wouldn't have the impact it does without that set-up. Everything else is just a slow reintroduction to Fitz living a quiet life, quite similar to Tawny Man in that respect, except longer than the Fitz as Tom Badgerlock living in his cabin bit in that. Fitz has certainly changed from the first book. So it depends on your taste, I know a lot of people don't appreciate Hobbs slow style, but if you like that style you are in for a treat.

Assassins Apprentice is free on Kindle right now. Dunno where that fits in the grand scheme of things or if it is only free on Amazon UK, but it might be worth knowing. Heck, you can get books 2 and 3 of the same series for under a fiver in a pack. May do that as I don't think I have read them. Are they the first assassin trilogy.

Also, I feel like I REALLY need to read some Tad Williams again...

ASSASSINS APPRENTICE is the first book in the first trilogy, which is arguably the best trilogy. Well worth a read.

And yeah, about Williams I'm much, much more impressed than I ever thought I would be by him. I'm only a 3rd into the first MST book and I'm already liking it much more than, lets' say WoT for the whole Classic Fantasy tropes thing.

And I don't know if it's been noted that Williams next book is THE LAST KING OF OSTEN ARD, a sequel trilogy to MST.

I have serious difficulty pointing at any one book and identifying a character i like reading more than Caine. SE and ICE have the bigger cast and the higher holyfuck level, GRRM has the depth, etc etc... but for sheer compelling 'i need to keep reading to know what happens to this guy next', Caine probably takes it.

Which fucking sucks because Stover is likely never going to write another Caine book. Dammit.

Reading Chill, book 2 of Bear's Jacob's Ladder. I enjoyed the themes in book 1 more, but book 2 is an overall step up in most other things. Good thing I have book 3 ready on my TRP.

To be fair, Caine's story is done, I can't really see where you'd go with that character as a PoV from here.

However, I'd love to see the plans for Acts of Faith to come to fruition.




As for Caine as a character: I don't think I'd say he's my favourite character ever (I'm not sure I have one, though I may lean towards Sam Vimes), but I'd love to see a meetup between him, Takeshi Kovacs, and Jorg Ancrath. Though as far as bastards-you-really-shouldn't-like-but-do, I have to say John Constantine takes the cake. That character has the very, very rare trait of having his own personal charisma that comes through no matter who the writer is and what he's doing (though the new Constantine in the new 52 doesn't have it half as much, from what I've read so far, which is interesting to me).
