That's a good comparison. I'm about 1/3rd of the way through. Waiting for the big reveal.


Books 5-7 kind of meander all over the world (but are still awesome). Then shit hits the fan HARD in a "story just got epic" way in Bk 8.

yes, supposedly. Though it's not out in MMPB (so i didn't buy it yet and can't tell you if Bk 10 is a letdown/ leaves room open for more). Bk 9 set things up for quite a finsh, though, although I'm not 100% enamoured with where Tchaikovsky started to take things.


It ties up things well enough, imho.

The world is so vast that Adrian Tchaikovsky could go back and explore some of the cultures in new books (with new characters), but it would not be anything like Esslemont's books in relation to the main series.

Started S3 of GOT.

Meanwhile, have adjusted my satellite plan and as a result have lost BBC America and Disney XD. So no Doctor Who or Star Wars Rebels for me till i figure out how to supplement...

Technically it's harder to make something real (spoilers! a big ship hitting an iceberg and sinking) look real than it is to make something unreal (spaceships, giant bugs, especially giant vagina brain bugs being massaged by Dougie Houser) look even semi-real.


Agreed, but then the actual cgi (as opposed to the mock-up they made of the ship) in Titanic is appalling in comparison. In my opinion, of course - I reckon it was more Hollywood trying to justify the money it spent on Titanic than any merits the film might have had.

I'm liking Assail but since I got it in hardcover it's not really a travelling book. Due to that I decided to recharge my Kindle and take a crack at The Silver Spike by Glen Cook. I'm realizing that I'm glad I didn't give up on this series like I thought I was going to. As long as I'm not reading them back to back in the omnibus editions I'm enjoying them.

25% into Echopraxia; it actually takes place simultaneously with Blindsight - fourteen years after Firefall but as the Theseus is making first contact. So far there are military grade zombies, weaponized tornadoes, and bad ass vampires. Watts does hard sci-fi really well and so far this is shaping up to be really damn good..

I finished the Scarab Path during lunch. Going to step away from The Shadows of the Apt to finish The Strain trilogy. Bought The Night Eternal (bk #3).

OK so in an attempt to climb out of my reading funk I have downloaded a couple of books about Nikola Tesla and a book about Elon Musk to read.

As I switched the wifi on my Kindle on it turns out I also got Assail. I guess I will be reading that soon too then...

Finished Echopraxia; complete mind-fuck. Really good but, damn, that took some thinking. By no means is this a light read, it demands full attention. Still, well worth the effort and a satisfying conclusion to the duo.

Also finished the Girl with All the Gifts; it was okay, different take on the zombie bit, well written and overall fairly enjoyable. 1/3 into Shift and 1/2 into Runner. Neither mind-blowing but both entertaining.

Reading Light by M. John Harrison next and listening to Acceptance by Vandermeer starting Tuesday.

Finished Kam Hurley's GODS WAR. I liked, didn't love, found it dragged at points. I really wanted to love it but it never quite moved beyond a cool setting for me.

Skin Game, and just finished Cold Days (Jim Butcher's Dresden Files for those unfamiliar).

Before that was Hobb's Fool's Assassin which I loved. Can't wait for the next one!

I've got Assail sitting here but waiting until after Skin Game, because I think if I go back to Malazan beforehand Skin Game will end up not being read....

Finished Deadhouse Gates. If anything, I enjoyed it even more this time than the previous occasions. Didn't think that was going to happen!

Now I'm just about finished Harvest by Jim Crace. I bought a few of last year's Booker Prize nominees when they were going for 99p in the Kindle Christmas sale, but this is the first one I've actually got down to reading.

Going through the owners trilogy by Neal Asher, it took a while to get started but once passed a bit of the first book it really does go to some interesting places and delivers really good entertainment.

Finished " The Initiate Brother " duology by Sean Russel. Liked it okay.
Some issues with pacing, but overall a nice bit of Asian-themed epic fantasy, with bare minimum of magic, a lot of intrigue, all worked into a pretty standard plot.

Working on my backlog, gonna give Neil Gaiman's "Anansi boys" a shot next.
