Finished Skin Game... Just wow!

Revelation Space is not bad, started a bit slow and skipping between persons is a bit irritating when listening to a audio book. Anyway its good to have something to listen to again.

Am now reading Wolf Star, the second in the Merrimack series by RM Meluch. Not sure if it is too soon after Skin Game for this or not...

Finished the Martian by Andy Weir. Five stars for this one. It's only sci-fi insofar as the setting is on Mars otherwise it's just an astranaut stuck on Mars trying to survive (he has a base of sorts and rovers, oxygenators, water systems....etc.). It is a great listen; the narrator nails it. Anyone thinking of giving this a chance, I say go for it. You won't regret it.

Reynolds will take you to some really, really epic moments in the series. Stay patient and think of really arrogant humans tinkering with things they little understand the entire time - because the things are way too complicated and/or because creepy space stories are the best that way.

Just downloaded Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, the Wastelands, and Use of Weapons. Got all these from the library and they're all re-reads/listens. I've been blazing through my audible library so I need to take a break to some freebies. I get my audible credits in three days but I'm not really sure what I'll buy. Not seeing Prince of Fools there. Hopefully it'll release on audible the same time as it does on kindle. Otherwise, I'll just roll my credits over cause the next couple of months have tons of new releases I'm looking forward to.

3/4 of the way through the Martian; fantastic book. It's about a guy stuck on a Mar's station having to McGyver his way through surviving. And it's really funny. Started Hard Magic and didn't dig it at all. People have superpowers, not magic. Didn't care for any of it. I may try it again later cause I paid $12 for it otherwise I'd ditch it.

Theres four books?! totally overlooked this when I checked it out on Goodreads.com. I had the notion for some reason that this was a trilogy. This makes my day!

So I know I am VERY late to the party but are the Dune books/audiobooks worth getting this late in the game?

Well I think I might have overdone it in the Dresdencrack. It only lasted me three days. The withdrawals haven't kicked in quite yet. After finishing SKIN GAME I buckled down over the last two days days and polished off DREAMS OF STEEL by Cook. I thought the pov shift was refreshing and this book drew me back in. Going to start Wooding's THE ACE OF SKULLS later today.

Read "Red Rising" a few days ago. Comparisons to "Hunger games" notwithstanding, it reminded me of Lord of the Flies but in a much more pulp/entertaining way. Loved it, looking forward to the 2nd book of the trilogy, "Golden Son".

It's just that it's been around two years since I read the first and I'm trying to figure out if I should do a re-read of the first book or if I'd be safe just jumping headfirst into this one... I'm curious on what you'd recommend once you get a few chapters in. (Of course any other recommendations on the subject would be welcomed as well.)

I haven't started ARK yet and it similarly remains high in the TRPFH bcs i really enjoyed REV SPACE, but from the last time i almost started it i can tell you there are some very detailed synopsis online to spare you the reread if you want to get right into it.


In other news, finished SKIN GAME... all good, comments in the ded-thread.

On the audio front, about 33% through Pullman's AMBER SPYGLASS. I've been enjoying listening to this series. The author narration and full voice cast really works well. I see why some peoole found bk2 dragged a bit early on, but i thought it moved nicely and i'm fully engaged moving thru bk 3.

Will likely go back to Tidhar's GREAT GAME next. I can't figure it out... i like his writing, characters, story, setting it all works, but for some reason his books just don't grab me... maybe the pacing... i'm not sure.

As someone who read Ark a few years after the RS "trilogy", I'd say you don't need to worry about a reread. Ark certainly stands on its own enough that it doesn't need the other books.

Just finished Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness. I quite enjoyed it as a simple science fiction novel, but I was sort of disappointed by the exploration of gender issues (or lack thereof). All the reviews and essays on it that I had read made it seem like it was an incisive look at gender roles and relationships, etc. etc. However, while the mutable genders of the Gethenians (and the explanations of why their societies may have evolved as they did) were important and interesting, the book didn't contain a particularly critical exploration of them. Still, Le Guin's prose was, as usual, stellar, and the plot was interesting.

Now, I have to choose whether to start Skin Game or Emperor of Thorns.


What am I thinking? There is no choice when you're addicted to Dresden.

Isn't ARK the third book in the trilogy/quinology?
