I finished Donaldson's Against All Things Ending last night. A very slow book, but necessary for the story, I think. I especially loved how Linden's storyline turned out. Moving on to The Last Dark.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

Terrific ending to the series. It's... everything you probably always wanted a Covenant book to be and more.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

About 2/3 through Authority; really good but completely different from Annihilation. Where the first is about Area X with a little characterization of the Biologist, this one is almost completely about Control with Area X taking a back seat to his characterization. It's amazing how Vandermeer's voice can change so drastically from story to story, fitting the protagonist rather than having the protagonist fit his voice.

I didn't realize it was out. Picking that up today.

Good to know it's a solid read so far!

Finished Authority. Wow. Real good, five stars. There are some parts that are creepy in the way that only Vandermeer can do creepy and his prose throughout is phenomenal. Really really looking forward to Acceptance, the final book in the trilogy.

I can't believe how much I enjoyed the first book in the series, so I'm chuffed to hear it's as good!

Finished the incredible webserial Worm (recommended upthread). The convergences rival Erikson at his best. Those fights .... Pacing was a bit uneven at times, which is not strange considering that the author had no way of going back and edit. Some plot elements that I was sceptical about initially turned out to be central and planted way ahead.

Now reading the ongoing Pact which is just as good, urban fantasy with a protagonist who gets beat up more than Dresden. Will be interesting to see where it goes considering how the scope of Worm grew.

Finished Blood Song this morning... started reading from where I left off yesterday about 9:30pm and just
could not put the book down. I just had to reach the end and at 3am I went to bed deeply satisfied.

Great book. For all the flaws of being a self published debut novel Anthony Ryan sure does know how to
tell a story. Really looking forward to Tower Lord.

Ha! Glad you enjoyed.

I've been petitioning Ryan to send me an ARC ebook of TOWER LORD to take on my vacation...nothing yet. B)

Finally got back to NOONSHADE by Barclay on my Kindle (it's been sitting a quarter read for months now).

Man it's nice to check back in with the Raven!

Also, one word Spells that consist of two words put together but retaining capitals (eg. IceChill) is easily one of the fave things about the series!

heh... initially i thought the one word spells were a bit trite vs 'modern' fantasy, but it grew on me and in later books some of the uses and variations start to get fun. Sure FlameOrb is just another term for Fireball, but even so, massed FlameOrb bombardment ftw!

And amusingly I always feel like there ought to be trademark's after them.

LOL

I think the fact that when I read DAWNTHIEF I happened to be playing SKYRIM, helped immensely with my imagining of Balaia's world, the spells, the armour ect.

Been in a starwars mood recently so decided to go through the Thrawn trilogy, not having read anything from the expanded universe. The first book is surprisingly readable, not exactly complex but rather entertaining.

Those are the weapons the dark elves used in Thor 2, right?
