I'm a carpenter/contractor and I do most of my work solo. Instead of a radio, I have my books. I listen to them while I drive, workout,...etc. I only have about 2 hours of free time a night (having a wife and two little girls) and my wife gets upset if I read all night. So, if I don't listen to books, I only read about one a month. I freak'n love books so audio's the only way for me. I put down about two (or 30 hrs) a week.

I can't sit and listen to an audiobook, unless you count driving. If I had a job that required constant thought, then there's no way I could listen to books. Whenever I do stuff that requires measuring, I'll pause the book, write all my measurements down, play. I miss some content but not much and you can always pick it up in context. I've definitely learned to carry lists cause it's really easy to forget what you're doing.

I couldn't imagine not listening to books, now. Since January 1st, I've listened to 27 books (4 of those exceeding 30 hrs) and I've only read 5 (3 of those being less than 200 pages).

Done with To Honour you call us and The Cripple God. Bet it's the 3. or 4. time but the end is still heartbreaking.

Finished Redshirts; overall, I found it very enjoyable but the last 1/4 or so of the book seemed tacked on and, to me, unnecessary. Anyway, still, it was good. Starting Neptune's Brood. Bought this the other night cause it was cheap and figured some real space opera was what I'm feeling like right now.

Still reading through Perdido Street Station (gots school so I only read when I feel the energies too) and I am still really enjoying it. One of my favourite things is how Mieville plays with different kinds of conscious, with the Weaver, the Slake Moths, the Council, the handlingers, it's all very neat and weird, I also like how all these different beings feed in different ways which is an interesting way to view about how we think. If what we consumed was different how would that effect our basic physiology and more importantly to me how would that effect our society (I'm more of society down type guy rather than a humanity up but that is a academic argument rather than a literary one). I like how the Weaver feeds on abstract beauty, and how the Council feeds on information and how that effects their motives and how they think. I'm kind of obsessed with that idea to the point I often explore it in my hobby-writing, though with extra-dimensional sentient ecosystems and tree gods, so I was quiet surprised that the book explores it in a kind of sideview way. Also I found the adventurers hilarious as I'm replaying Skyrim right now and my character pretty much acts like they do.

Yeah I'm really enjoying it.

Man, there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Pre-Erikson those books were some of the best 17 year old me had ever read! I doubt they would be remotely as good now but I have fond memories of reading that trilogy. Will be interesting to hear what you think.

100 pages.

That's all I could manage.

It's....pretty formulaic and didn't really interest me.

Yeah, Richius is one of the more grating characters ever invented.

I seem to remember the 2nd half was a lot more interesting but like I said it was about 12 years ago I read it & had never heard of Erikson at the time...

Done with the two first Man of war books. Anyone got some scify recommendation? Plus for human against anything, so I can play imaginative StarDrive games based upon what I have read.

Humans against anything, in a sci-fi setting. Sounds like you want to read stuff by Neal Asher. His POLITY series of books are great fun. I loved the Agent Cormac books in the Polity universe, but the Spatterjay books (such as Prador Moon) might be more your liking.

A good sci-fi series to get would be Stephen Donaldson's "GAP series". It gets pretty grim, but is actually people in space.

As always, Iain M. Banks is worth a look, especially the Culture books.

If the Gap series is as mentally exhaustingas the stories about Covernat I'll better read them in the summer. But I'm gonna take a look as Asher. Thanks.

Faith by John Love, though I'm not sure if that would work as a StarDrive basis...

I really enjoyed Stealing Light by Gary Gibson when I read it. For various reasons I never got to reading the rest of the Shoal sequence. Throwing out this reco has reminded me that I should. It was just proper committed, imaginative space opera fun.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
