I'm still of the mind that JJ will do a STAR TREK rebooted thing... into an Alt timeline for the new movies...leaving the existing EU intact, just in a different universe. It's a really easy way to keep existing canon without stifling himself in the process.

The other day I read Blood Song, by Anthony Ryan, which isn't hugely innovative but it's engaging (I did read it in a day) and likable- think something like the Jon Snow segments of aSoIaF mixed with a bit of Rothfuss. He's not as good a writer as either, but it's definitely worth a read if you like Jon Snow.


Now I'm reading The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairlyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. Amusingly, it's a kid's book (the first of a series) that's spun off from Palimpsest, one of the last books you'd expect a kid's book to spring from (it's basically about sex. Sometimes very weird sex Also about dreams, but very much about sex).

But anyway, it's dead good so far. Valente's prose is just absolutely stunning.

I finished Neverwhere just a little bit ago. Nothing really to say about it other than it's obviously a Gaiman novel, it's fantastic, and I sure as hell should have read it years ago.

Moving on now, I've started Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Murakami. I know i've seen lots of good remarks about his work on here, and I'm hoping I chose a good one for my first taste of his work. In retrospect, August held introductions to a few well liked authors on this board for me.

Sadly, I cannot read her books ever since I found out that she can be such a raging jerk on social media and her blog. She put me right off her writing.

She does come off as very cocky, but not enough for me to be put off reading her writing - she's hardly Orson Scott Card or Dan Simmons, she's just really arrogant.


Her writing pretty much earns it though. You should definitely try to give her a try at some point. I'm pretty sure she has some short stories up online where you can get a taster without giving her money straight up.

Seriously, if you like Neil Gaiman, Valente's so worth a look.

I'll be spending the next few days reading comics and GN's I picked up at FanExpo over the weekend. Mostly Becky Cloonan and Gerard Way's KILLJOYS, and Brian Wood's CONAN, and a short two comic story for NORTHLANDERS.

Then it's onto THE CROWN TOWER, and KENOBI.

Last year on vacation, I knocked back 4 books in 6 days, and that's with a toddler and a newborn. Love having time to read. Right now, I get maybe 1.5 hrs a night of free time and I can spend that either reading, watching t.v., or whatever. I've been knocking back a whole book every two weeks. However, being in construction, and working alone, I listen to at least one audiobook a week.

Yeah I am enjoying my free reading time atm. It will slow right down once I am back in work...

I have finally managed to push through the last third of Tim Wagonner's "Nekropolis". The third book really did get quite formulaic, and pretty predictable. Still very action-y. but by the third time the novelty wears off. And the fact that he recycled entire phrases between books--REALLY grated by Book 3.

So then I picked up "King of thorns", as I was nursing a hangover and wasn't gonna do much Sunday night. I finished the book in one evening. It's fun, well-paced and entertaining, but I still don't consider it ground-breaking (so sue me).I'll definitely read "Emperor", but lawrence didn't move away from being a mmpb purchase for me.

next up--think I'll give Gavin Smith's "Veteran" a shot.
