Agreed on the payoff, the first trilo is one of those works that, like Abercrombie's First Law, reads better as a whole than in parts.
I haven't found Bakker's second trilo to be as strong, tho i allow for the possibility i've been reading them as they come out, and not all in a row as i did w the first tril.


Finished Hearne's TRICKED - far better than Hammered - and the promo for bk 5 led me straight into TRAPPED. Good fun so far.

34. The Golden Age by John C. Wright - This one was too weird even for me.

35. Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds - Sorry, I know Reynolds is popular and oft-mentioned here, but it just bored me.

36. Old Man's War by John Scalzi - Ding ding ding, we have a winner. Loved, loved. loved it. Extremely readable, engaging, funny (Master Sergeant Antonio Ruiz: "If you're the best that the Earth has got to offer, it's time we bend over and get a tentacle right up the ass.")...nary a dull moment in the entire book.

37. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - If you haven't read this one, you should. What's wrong with you anyway?

38. Dust by Joan Frances Turner - Passable YA zombie fiction. Liked it enough to snag the sequel (as a bargain book), but it probably won't get a permanent place in my library. For amazing YA post-apocalypse fiction, check out Z for Zachariah.

So I'm done with Altered Carbon... man I'm slow with my reading material for the last half a year. I wish I dedicated more time to this book, since it really drew me in for the first couple of chapters. All in all, a good and dynamic read, original too.

Annnddd finally! Onto The Bonehunters. I could barely wait to flip through the first few pages.

Since last time, I read the first two books of Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, and I'm not really sure how I felt about them. I guess it was just kinda hard to follow what was actually happening outside of the broad strokes. I'll probably keep reading them though.

As a break I also reread Paul Kearney's CORVUS so I could finally get to KINGS OF MORNING yesterday. Both books were excellent but CORVUS gets the nod as best of the series. I skipped over THE TEN THOUSAND, as I know the historical version well enough, but I highly recommend the whole series.

Someone posted that they loved it but i can't remember who it was... this has been on my radar too, read a promo chapter and it was engaging enough without blowing me away (pun intended).

Finished TRAPPED. His best one yet. A real sense of characters in jeapordy, some great Irish pantheon and fae intirgue, took the Norse mythos to some places most authors don't and some fun with the Olympians (Greek AND Roman, no less). Could complain that there us almost too much going on but Hearn makes it work.

Next up... have to be strategic... heading on vacation soon and can't carry any doorstoppers so RED COUNTRY has to wait... lots of good stuff on the ereader but as a rule i don't take that to the beach, so... time to attack the TRP...!

FWIW, I am liking Instrumentalities as much as if not more than The Black Company. I'm currently reading Surrender to the Will of the Night and loving it. The first book is a bit rough, but stick with it. Once I'm done with this book I will be anxiously waiting for book 4, I believe it's done, but no release date yet. I will probably read either the Dread Empire or Starfishers.

To put in my two cents on Bakker. I read TDtCB recently. I loved the first third or so of the book, but then it just became a bore fest. I don't think I'll be coming back to Bakker anytime soon.

I also just finished my reread of The Eye of the World. I liked it a lot more the second time around, and I really liked it the first time. I think Jordan does not excel in any one area, but he does everything very well. I really enjoyed the history, races, lore and world-building. Considering this is derivative, formulaic, a bit dated and your typical farm boy saves the world story, I think he did a great job making this work. I will read the entire series, but I am a but concerned that most feel the series falls off around books 6-11 and I was not impressed with Sanderson after reading Mistborn.

He said that what a little girl said to Monk way back in THE LAST ORACLE will come to fruition, and that a few other small seeds he planted in early books are going to become gigantic, series changing events. He say this one is his game-changer.

And judging by the description of the next Sigma book, EYE OF GOD...jeebus, this is going to be one insane scientists with guns book!

Oh and a little aside, the girl in front of me in the signing line had just the day before gotten a third book-related tattoo (the first two were Dean Koontz quotes)...and it was the Sigma symbol...under her arm, upper side (Rollins, who was very impressed, snapped a pic and will be posting it to his FB). I talked to her in the elevator telling her how cool I thought the tat was, and told her my story about my visit to Washington DC and telling Mrs. QT about the scientists with guns that are HQ'ed under the Smithsonian Castle as we stood in front of it, and she looked at me like I'd grown three heads (I told James too, he laughed).

A great event. James' Fave food and beverage...are Pizza and Rockstar Energy drinks. They were in mass supply for us...to go with our signed books.

He was super down to earth and says he's still got a number of Sigma books in his head.
