Completed the Hitchhiker's saga. Absolutely awful ending. I ordered And Another Thing, and even though it has a lot of nasty reviews, I hope it will provide a better end, it's just sad leaving things like this.

Starting a re-read of Bullet Garden and Blood Sabbath (Baccano! novels) and picking up Sweeney Todd.

How are you with the darker tone? It took a bit for me to adjust to it, but yeah Zafon's writing carries you through even the darker bits.

Am only about 100 pages in but I'm good with the tone, SHADOW wasn't exactly light and fluffy for most of the book.

He has a way of writing 'dark' that lets the reader know it will get better, so to speak.

And i'm beginning to put his use of words up there with Gaiman... almost EVERYTHING operates on multiple levels. Like SHADOW it's incredible to read.

Agreed. What I find most amazing about it is that they've still kept the economy of language across a translation, which is incredibly hard to do.

A little over the 200pg mark on The Black Prism. I thought the book was decent up until now, and then a couple of things happened over the last couple chapters to elevate it to the "well fuck me, this is going to be interesting..." level for me.

I assume you're talking about the major twist that happened pretty early on. I need to get back to that book. FoD has taken priority.

Most the way through listening to Market Forces by Richard Morgan - fucking love this guy and the narrator Simon Vance. He's definitely one of my favorite authors. For those of you who (whom?) haven't read this book because it's not sci-fi or fantasy need to check this out; not sure the time setting but it's before Thirte3n right before shit goes sci-fi - probably about a hundred years or so. It's similar in taste to Thirte3n which I consider a fucking masterpiece.

Also started reading King of Thorns; only about 50 pages in(?kindle) and am enjoying myself immensely.

Got The Wind Through the Keyhole in the mail yesterday so I'll be paging through it here soon.

Passed 450 on TBP. It strikes me just how enjoyable Weeks works are without being super dense. Then, on top of it all Kip is just fun as hell to read. Such a great inner monologue.

I was under the impression that Market Forces and Thirte3n were set in the same future. There are similar corporation names in both - I think. I'd put MF at 2060, 13 at 2150, and Kovacs at 2300. Complete and utter legless, groundless, ignorant speculation on my part, but if I were asked by a random guy (or girl) on the street, that's what I'd tell them (it happens more often than you think).

Edit: And I'd put Steel and Cold at 21000 A.D. or so.

Kip is a shitsnack, whiner most days. I loathed him for the majority of the first book.

Finished The Devil Delivered and Fishin' with Grandma Matchie. Those were, uh, interesting... Both good, both weird.

Thought about reading Revolvo next, but instead I'm starting Mistborn. Five chapters in, so far, and it's good, but ::sigh:: why does the only female character have to be a 16-year old girl with trust issues getting perpetually smacked around...

Commenting on this 5 chapters in is a little silly...especially because of how strong Vin becomes. Not to mention she's the protagonist ffs.

Aside from that, most stories about most humans (not just girls) about people growing to realize great power begin with them getting smacked around as youths, and having trust issues.

See: Spiderman, Batman, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, Kvothe, Kip, King Arthur (from Whyte's series), Pug, Buffy, Paksenarrion, Sirantha Jax, Lessa, Any of GRRM's leads....need I go on?

I don't normally like to mention books here until I'm near the tail end... But I'm so immediately impressed with Brent Weeks' The Way of Shadows that I will be pretty shocked if I don't end up loving it and picking up the rest of the series.
