Just finished up Implacable the latest of lost fleet series, more fun aliens but also more rather boring humans. Perhaps the series is running out of steam.
Started up Elder Race a short story by Adrian Tchaikovsky which is enjoyable so far.

That ending.
Holy.
Gunfuck.
Not good you make me want to re-read the third book
I am now rereading the last third of the third book.
So to close the loop on this...
Sam Sykes (is Diana Gabaldon's son, i just learned) is a fantasy author. He's written about ten books.
Between 2019 and 2022 he wrote a three book + one novella series.
I became aware of Sykes' conduct issue after reading and enjoying book 1 and putting a library req on bk 2. 2 and 3 came up around the same time. I Just Finished them, I thought they were a lot of fun. Not without flaw, but overall i enjoyed. Closer to Hollywood than Malazan but enough depth to move past popcorn.
3ish years ago Sykes was accused of making gross sexual comments to female authors and fans. Online he admitted to it, apologized for it, stated he was entering therapy. Then he more or less shut up afaik.
There were also allegations of groping female fans. In a maybe 5min google dip what i saw about these and his response was vague.
His publisher dropped him for his conduct after they finished the contract for the trilogy.
In his blog post when 3 was released late last year Sykes seems to sort of suggest that the series, or just book 3, it's not clear to me, was an apology or coping mechanism or corrective step. The lead character is a hardcase woman, and no one ever threatens her with rape or sexual violence or even suggestive language, tho she has a serious trauma/violation backstory, not overtly sexual.
If he did any of that as an 'apology'... i dunno, i suppose it proves he can write without including the douchbag things he admitted that he did. No clue how that reflects his conduct or personality now.
I am... divided on how i feel about this. Unlike the Eddings', and Rowlings, whose conduct became an issue years after i read their work, this was up front and did impact how i read the books. I enjoyed the books, but the filter was different from the usual.
No fast answer here, it's one i'll think about. I don't want to do research on every new/new-to-me author before i read their books. I also don't want to support bad people. Which i suppose requires at least a bit of research. Which is not radically different from what do for other things in life.
NEXT UP: Back to the Laundry spin off for Stross' latest, SEASON OF SKULLS.
