Finished the audiobook of THE PURSUIT OF WILLIAM ABBEY by Claire North, possibly one of my favourites of hers. Very enjoyable. Spent a bit of time catching up with the Scrubs podcast and now I am listening to SANDMAN ACT I. Oh my days. They have done a flipping good job on this. It is less of a narrated story and more of a radio drama in style.

I think it was Abyss that recommended it and I'm so glad I took that advice. Will download ACT II to listen to it following this.

Finished THE MAURITIUS COMMAND by PO’B and loved it, another great Aubrey & Maturin novel!

And after 4 in a row, I’m taking a break to read something else.

And I’ve decided to reread my fave Murakami book, 1Q84! Huzzah. I have the Hardcover First Edition of it, but it’s like Sanderson-size to hold and read at 900pgs, so I picked up the 3 volume box set on the cheap recently, so I’ll go book by book this time like Japanese readers did when it debuted a decade ago.

Oh man but I'd forgotten how dark this gets on occasion. Listening to the awesome chapter where the group is stuck in the diner by Dr Destiny. I've read it before a number of times but it's been a while. Such a great plot but some of it is pretty brutal.

They went way darker there than i expected, even if they dodged some of the ickier bits from the floppy.

Another surprise for me is that Kat Dennings was actually pretty good as Death! Was not sure she'd do the character justice (and I would not really want her in the live action version) but she is pretty good!

I'd go further and say she nailed it. The entire audio cast is brilliant.
My one criticism was that a couple of the less human voices were either difficult to understand or not inhuman enough, but that's a minor point, nothing was impacted.

Then I read Into the Drowning Deep (written under her pseudonym Mira Grant) which I could not put down. "Science vessel hunts killer mermaids" is a good 5-word synopsis, and I loved it from start to finish.

In the next night or two, I will be finishing up her Indexing, which is a kind of urban fantasy about a covert government team trying to keep fairy tale narratives from intruding into the real world. It's fantastic; the concept is great, and McGuire really kicks things up a notch around the halfway point. There's a sequel out that I'll be reading next.

It's interesting, my intro to Seanan McGuire was her very recent killer mermaid 'horror', and last year's Middlegame which was hands down brilliant. Going back in time and reading her earlier stuff (Feed was 2010, Indexing is 2013, 2014)... wow. She was really really good even then.

Finished EMPRESS OF FOREVER by Max Gladstone. I liked some of the ideas and world building if a bit tech-billioanire-entrepreneur in concept. The characters rang a bit hollow which meant I think you need to be more a plot driven reader for this book. It seems a lot of readers didn't finish because of that. However I've heard other good things so I'll pick up another Gladstone.

Next I'm reading THE HEARTS INVISIBLE FURIES by John Boyne which early bits are let's say volatile... everyone I know who has read this book loves it.

I reco THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR. He wrote it w a co-author so the tone isn't his usual but it is very very good.
If earbooks are your thing the narrator does an exceptional job.

I'm currently reading THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR and I have read 5/6 of his Craft Sequence books, and I've loved everything I've read of his so far. I'm pretty sure he just had a bit of a dud with Emperess.

I enjoyed Empress, but it's nothing like the Craft books, and those are definitely better. I'm not sure, but I feel like possibly Empress lost something by having to tie the really wild OTT space opera/galactic romance setting back to our Earth? Not sure.
