OH!!!

I didn't realize William Forstchen wrote another book. 48 hours!

YEAAAAAAASSS. Soooo much Doomporn it makes me all happy inside.

Description:

In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off.

Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

This sounds like a Made-For-TV-Movie plot.

Finished Black Company 4 aka Shadow Games yesterday. Subpar entry by comparison. I liked the characters but many of the new additions to the cast feel rather one note. Plus I hated
Spoiler
. The story is nothing to write home about. No flying whales and mantas with lasers, no ancient evil demigod, no man-eating castles...Just a long-ish roadtrip with the Black Company with the occasional skirmish that works out for the main characters until it doesn't.
Book 5 apparently focuses on the Lady's POV which I feel may be a welcome breath of fresh air.

Yep 5 years to start and now about 8-9 years around pg 150.

All very boring. Very little action and it feels even more excessive then the start of my grind from bk 6 onwards.

Why do you keep reading this series that is the pestle to your spice of life?

This is serious real life stuff! At any given time one of these can happen and totally mess us up and do you know what

Because when it’s moving it’s really moving. Some of the best popcorn I’ve read. I still remain firm that it will be the only Weber I will ever read.

Also, BK has literally no standards (see: Bachelorette)

Started Hannu Rajaniemi's SUMMERLAND. Stopped a few chapters in. For the level of imagination and originality his JEAN LE FLAMBEUR trilo hit, this was trite, with far too much exposition. I love the idea of an espionage story set as this was crossing a populated afterlife ... but that was where it ended for me. Everything about it just felt done and tiresome. And far too much 'tell don't show.

Shame, but as you said in the cheap books thread such an early fire sale didn't bode well. I'm so enjoying the Jean le Flambeur trilogy too, and I will get to the last book of that soon.

The Sparrow is great. It's pretty bleak and holds no punches with humanity. Given it was written in 1996 I think it's pretty prescient. It is taking me time to go through it through due to the bleakness- might need a change of pace in whatever o read next.
Para todos todo, para nosotros nada.

MottI'd always pegged you as more of an Ublala

Finished City of Stairs. Liked it but didn't love it. Would put it squarely in the middle of the RJB pack.

Logs on to Kindle store, read a good 5 or 6 books these last two weeks. Looks at "recommended for you".

The Poppy War, The Written, Redemptions Blade, Promise of Blood

"For you in Science Fiction"

The Grey Bastards, The Bitter Twins, Holy Sister (not even out yet),

Seriously, none jump out at me when going onto them and reading synopsis.

Wife shared Sally Red Shoes with me but reading the synopsis of that and it sounds depressing.

So come onto this thread and I am going with recommendation. The Dragonbone Chair. Anyone read any of the titles above? Did they leave a lasting impression?
Apt is the only one who reads this. Apt is nice.

I was massively disappointed by The Poppy war. If it had been much longer I wouldn't have finished it

PROMISE OF BLOOD is Powder Mage Book 1, and it's quite excellent.

Doing something unusual. Reading the giant superhero webserial - Worm. 40% into it, its really really good.

Also listening to Clive Barker's Imajica. Apart from the sex scenes which are irritating, its not bad.
