So something that struck me today

I was skimming over my Goodreads shelves and I discovered something depressing. I have had only 1 new 5 star read in the last 3-4 months. I read a lot but I am slightly worried about being able to continue to find really fulfilling books. A lot of the stuff I read now seems a bit mediocre.

For a book to hit 5 stars for me, it must be something I'm willing to reread multiple times. I have a lot of 4 star books, but not a lot of 5 star.

Finished BEREN AND LÚTHIEN this morning.

It's...fine. Here's my issue though. In the SILMARILLION, the tale is clean, concise, and well told. What I expected in this new volume was an expanded version of that like THE CHILDREN OF HURIN...but instead Christopher has essentially cobbled together his fathers notes and manuscripts that were abandoned (and have already been collected elsewhere; Book of Lost Tales, HoME) before he finally revamped the story into what we know it as. So this is kind of a concerted presentation of the various stages this tale went through in Tolkien's mind on its way to becoming the one we know. A kind of forensics of the Lay of Lethian. And in that vein it's weird. We get the original tale (only about half told; this is the one with the giant cats RetiredBridgeburner spoke of above), in which all the names are different, and Beren is actually a "gnome" (elf from a different place, and begrudged by the Noldor)...and then we get repeated cuts into the tale to hear Christopher wax about his father's choices, and the various bits and bobs that make up the volume. In there is the story we know of these two...but also all the bones of what got them there, and I feel kind of poorer for it? If that makes sense? Like I feel like I was opened a window into Tolkien's machinations that I didn't care to see? Basically we are seeing his "mistakes". The things the writer chose (rightly) to change in the telling of his tale.

So unless you want a CSI dip into the story that became Beren and Luthien, this may not be for you. I have higher hopes for THE FALL OF GONDOR to resemble the expanded HURIN volume than this.

Anyways, onto finishing DEATH OF DULGATH and then a first read of THE DISAPPEARANCE OF WINTER'S DAUGHTER by Michael J. Sullivan up next!

Agreed. I feel like five stars get thrown out very easily by some people. For me, if I feel like a book is good/solid, it equals three starts, and has to be exceptionally good and rereadable to receive five starts. I personally don't mind because not every book is going to exceptional and I consider myself lucky if I find one or two per year I deem to be five star ones. Some years have none.

I’m pretty generous with my 5 stars. It’s usually any book that I keep thinking about at work, and I can’t wait to get home and read it. I have no interest in being objective about these things.

Goodreads gives pretty easy guidelines. Imho. 5 stars is "it was amazing". If I read a book and it kept me turning the pages and excited up to the end, and I can't find any significant faults, then it could get a 5.

Anyway a couple of other books I'm reading:

Halfway through Naomi Novik's Uprooted and it's...fine? It's not bad but I remember some really gushing reviews when this book came out, and I'm not seeing it.

On a more positive note, I'm 130 pages into Django Wexler's The Thousand Names and really enjoying it! I'm still in the early stages but I can't wait to read more.

Yeah, it was not so great IMNSHO either. It's fine. That's about it. The sequel is out now, and I don't really have much drive to go get it.

Her Temeraire series, through suffering from some repetitive/fatigue in the latter books, was far better.

Goodreads has thrown me off a little because it's so nice-nice, even two stars is "It's ok". One star is really the only score you can give something you didn't like.

Goodreads has armies of self-published authors that 5 star each others books. I made the mistake of buying one once after it ranked in the top 5 of best speculative fiction. List was relatively new and some guy and either a bunch of his friends or sock puppets all voted for one book, his. I quit going there.

How are you tracking your progress in books without Goodreads? Like knowing what dates you started a book, what page you got to on your last read, etc.

Google Sheets (formerly an Excel spreadsheet) and LibraryThing. Goodreads is kinda garbage.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
