Like I said took me 40-50 pgs to properly get into it but once I did I read straight through them all. Enjoy

Started, reached the point where Marius enters the Senate hall.

Do you know the particular history of this part? I didn't have much knowledge of this point. I recognized names but without story spoilers my knowledge didn't kick in till bk 3.

Not really. I know the earlier Scipio vs Hannibal part, also the caesar part, but not this earlier Marius part.

Finished DG. I am quite pleased and quite pummeled. Getting involved in a reread of FoD over at the GAGME FB page so I'm holding off on MoI for now.

15% into First Man in Rome, book 1 of the Masters of Rome series.

This book is strangely addictive and very hard to put down

Just finished Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Very, very good scifi book. I read it off the back of SE recommending it in a recent interview.

Started Swords Against Death by Leiber.
“The others followed, and found themselves in a small, stuffy basement, which would have been damp, smelly, close, and dark, were it not, in fact, well-lit, which prevented it from being dark.”

I finished a few books:

City of Miracles by Bennett - superb and fitting end to a very very good series. The heartbreaks are earned and the action is stellar.

The Seven by Newman - really good. The action isn't as intense over the entire book as previous books, but that's because Newman builds up a campaign to an enormous clash. Much goat interludes are had, to my tremendous satisfaction.

Willful Child 2 by Erikson - I thought this was half very good and half flat/lame. Reading this as a change of pace after authors who are taking a defter approach to social commentary didn't work well for me. I'm also somewhat disappointed in Erikson's refusal to broaden this in ways that Sir Pterry or Carl Hiaasen or Waugh or Vonnegut managed to do.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Yeah I am basically devoting most of my spare time to this series now.

I loved City of Miracles and I really need to pick up the Seven

I'm about halfway through Assassin's Fate right now. This tour of all her characters from the entire Realm of the Elderlings is so heartfelt, yet tinged with melancholy (as this is the supposed last book in it). As such, I've decided to slow my roll and savor it — I won't be reading it on my commute anymore; just at home.

Spoilers mid-AF
Spoiler

My commute read is now LeGuin's The Farthest Shore. I'll probably stop with this one, and not read further Earthsea books. I really liked Tombs of Atuan — everything about it was much stronger than WoE, though not much actually happened from beginning to end (but, LeGuin is masterful enough to weave a good yarn from a single thin thread). From what I've read online, however, the books after the first three are good, but not good enough for me to invest my time in.

Earbook - Schwab's Shades of Magic bk 2, GATHERING OF SHADOWS. All good. They gave this book the rolls royce earbook treatment, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading (they do Sanderson's earbooks). Bk 1 wasn't wildly original but it set up some interesting characters (or rather, relationships between characters) and i liked the overarching multiple Londons plot. So far bk 2 looks to be diving nicely into both elements.

Ebook - SENLIN ASCENDS. Still. All good, just little eyetime to read, and what i do have tends to be shorter pretty picture works like...

Dead Tree - SANDMAN: OVERTURES. Oh gods this is so so very good. Damn Gaiman, it took all of two pages to yank me right back into Sandman hard.

PrettE pictures - LOCKE & KEY marathon continues. Great stuff.

FoD reread is on hold till the 21st.

Good thing too. Neal Stephenson's and Nicole Galland's D.O.D.O. appeared on my kindle today. It is terrific so far. This one may not last until tomorrow, let alone the 21st.

I picked up Hunters & Collectors, the second book by M. Suddain. I was a tiny bit wary because his first, Theatre of the Gods (it's not a series or anything, just, you know, the author's previous book), while very good had a few issues that risked dragging the whole thing down into a self-satisfied mess, and while it avoided that I was worried that a second effort wouldn't. But I'm glad I took the plunge because instead, while still really really OTT and very pleased with its own cleverness, this book improves on that one in every way so far. Far more controlled, the humour sits better, the prose is quality without constantly throwing itself off the cliff of self-indulgence. And it's still just a whole load of fun.

I can't really go into the premise: the basic is that an interstellar restaurant critic becomes obsessed with finding and reviewing a fictional hotel and restaurant which sounds dry but to go into any more detail would ruin the surprise. So I'll just heartily recommend it, with the assurance that it contains plenty of plotting, skullduggery and high adventure, especially for fans of the likes of Jeff VanderMeer (particularly the Ambergris books), Catherynne Valente, and Nick Harkaway.

Although I do have some way to go so I hope I'm not reporting back in the next couple of days that the second half is shit. :D
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Masters of Rome #1 - First Man in Rome progresses to 58%. So much happens!

Also made a lot of progress in listening to the Last Wish. I really like the Witcher stuff so far.

I ended up starting "Royal Assassin" as my next commute read. About 5 chapters in, and it's ok. Fitz is dealing with adjustment disorder, and not sure where are we going with this, but not bad so far.

70% through DODO and loving it. It's a gripping yarn with plenty of humor.

heh. I was pleasantly surprised when a fictionalized (alleged) ancestor of mine appeared, playing a fairly meaty part in the story. :(

The Farthest Shore was, by far, the best of the three Earthsea books I've read — and its ending is a great closure point.

I'm now starting Tchaikovsky's Children of Time as my commute read.

Children of Time is the best book Tchaikovsky has written. I absolutely loved it.
