Finally managed to get a decent listen to MR Carey's the Girl with all the Gifts. Its a really well written book and I am really enjoying it, which is surprising as I usually hate zombies.
...

I have about 15% left and yeah, very well written. I have a low tolerance for zombie fiction and not once did i consider dropping it. Clever take on the genre, well written characters, pace is good, and when action goes down Carey, as he did with the Felix Castor books, nails it viscerally.

I am 15% in, and I love the way the PoVs are plotted and the clinical aspect si being developed along with the gradual reveal of the bigger picture. This seems to be a very smart book.

Oh man, consider me happy I bailed before I encountered THAT abomination. LOL!

Is the man ill? I can't imagine anyone who's brain is functioning correctly coming up with a character name like that.

Really, it looks like something in Welsh.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

I don't think that'd be a bad idea Abyss.

On topic: She is the Darkness. I'm artound chapter 70, and Holy Shit. I definitely see the influence on Mr Erikson now. With the developments in the last few chapters I'm very curious as to where he's taking the last 200 pages of this since he's wrapped up so many threads already.

Ignore the above comment...I've been detracted now....

SAFE HOLD #1. Well, it took just over 100 pages…to get fully annoyed. The faux-names still piss me off to high heaven, and they take me out of the story nearly every time. It’s SOOOOOO irritating. The story is alright, but nothing special…and in 100 pages absolutely nothing kickass or awesome has occurred. In fact I’ve had to struggle to get this far through at least 3 of the info dump sections. How this guy is quite decent at the space stuff (that was in the prologue at least), and terribad at the medieval fantasy stuff is beyond me.

I’ve put it down for now.

I may come back to it in the future…but for now it was just annoying me. And I’ll be up front and say so far that the names are my main gripe. The idea that in 800 years Adamson would somehow become Ahdamsyn…and not only that but ALL names globally would inexplicably evolve in the same way…is a linguistic nightmare, and a fallacy I can’t get around. I also don’t want to have to sit there each time sounding these shitty names out to figure out what it SHOULD be in our dialect as it just yanks me out of the story…never mind trying to sort out WHY a language would evolve in such an idiotic and backwards way. Language DROPS unneeded aspects as time goes on, it does not add fucking Y’s to them or silent bloody H’s. Either make up new fantasy names, or leave the old earth names how they were. This society is meant to have been born from the get-go as hyper-literate (to utilize the stamping of the religious doctrine into their culture so heavily)…and as such there would be absolutely ZERO reason for names to take such drastic changes over time with everyone being literate. I’ll even use an earth example. Alfred, King of Wessex…was king over 1000 years ago…that name has not changed. Last names with son’s in them, like Johnson or Adamson…hearken back even further to the norse practice of your child’s surname being your name + “son”…or in places like Iceland “dottir” (daughter)…and those names have come through time unchanged…in a civilization that wasn’t hyper literate.

Sidebar: If Nimue is meant to have trouble understanding the evolved dialects of English language (also, why just English when there were so many Asians on the Command Crew?)...one must assume that the book itself is "translated" when those people speak those dialects not recognized as earth English are spoken...so why are the names not given their old earth surrogates? They all seemingly have one. So that makes no sense either. I think Weber just wanted to have fantasy names, and went the lazy route.

Grumble grumble. I’m annoyed. LOL

Thank you, now I know I don't need to bother with that series. This kind of thing annoys me so much I don't care what else it has to offer.

Not that I'd have gotten to it anytime in the next five years, seeing as I've been chewing on The Great Ordeal for the past two months due to lack of time for reading.

STAKED, the latest in the Iron Druid series, is not a very good book.
In my opinion.

Actually, I'm finding it's kind of outright bad at times. Choppy unrelated storylines, unnecessary tangents, mundane events basically killing time.

Also, the narrator of the earbook should probably avoid being alone with Jews, Canadians, Poles, or dog-owners for the rest of his life. Possibly Indians too.

...all that aside tho,

Read the second of Lila Bowen's series The Shadow, Conspiracy of Ravens. Continues to be a good fun fantasy western. I also appreciated that one of my major issues with the first book- regarding the gender identity of the character and a disparity between the narrative/PoV thoughts and the stated feelings- was addressed and dealt with very early on; to be honest it wasn't too subtle but it got it done.

Past that, I think this was more focused and better paced than the first book, with a more concrete aim all the way through giving it a better through-line. Sometimes the mythology feels a bit simplistic compared to similar narratives - but then again in some of those I have been known to complain that the author is trying to do too much so I shouldn't over-pick. It keeps things under control, anyway.

Good read, anyway. Now continuing the Western theme I've started Sebastian Barry's Days Without End, a non-fantasy version this time, although I've also been doing a re-read of Karen Lord's The Best of All Possible Worlds, which reminds me I should get around to the sequel because Lord's work is thoroughly charming.

Figured I should lurk less and contribute more to something that builds the trp.

Just finished The House of Shattered Wings by Alliette de Bodard which I picked up due to a variety of nominations for awards.

The world building is good, very much and drop you in the middle and figure it out for yourself approach. It's set in a post great destruction Paris in a world where Angels have been cast from heaven and retain a half life of their former power but none of their memory.

The decaying glory vibe of the book is excellent and the atmosphere and characterisation from that make it a really interesting world you want to explore. It's a really good concept.

But what you get a murder mystery confined in a smaller element of the world that never really satisfies. Of the three protagonists there was only one that I really engaged with and as the book went on I found it less engaging as it shifted from the world building to the murder mystery plot.

There was the odd loose end that could picked up in this world and depending on the reviews I'd read that to learn more about it, but I wouldn't recommend it too much otherwise.

Reading the fourth in the Lymond Chronicles now which I'd recommend to all and sundry on the forum.
Para todos todo, para nosotros nada.

MottI'd always pegged you as more of an Ublala

Finished Angels of Destruction. This book doesn't quite have the hook of The Stolen Child, but Keith Donohue is such a good prose and character writer that it was always lovely to read even while it wasn't a page-turner. He doesn't have Gaiman's pop instincts and their styles aren't particularly comparable, but if they have something in common it's making fools of those who've drawn a big fat solid boundary line between literary and genre fiction.
