Unfortunately (or not, depending on your point of view) I made the jump from Tolkien almost directly to Stephen R. Donaldson and then Erikson, so the likes of Feist and Eddings are completely unpalatable to me. (I read both Magician and the Belgariad on my wife's recommendation, and couldn't stand either one.)

The guy who originally turned me on to Donaldson has been trying to get me to read the Belgariad for decades. I went so far as to buy the book and read the first 100 pages but that's about it. Not sure if he's read Erickson. Maybe I'll make a deal with him and read Eddings if he'll do SE.

No matter how you slice it, the Belgariad is YA fantasy. Sure it could be a decent intro for an adult not familiar with what else the genre has to offer, but otherwise it is what it is. I imagine many adults who read it early and reread it still keep some of the nostalgic enjoyment, me included, but if SIF or MBF is your thing, the Belgariad is Sesame Street to Game of Thrones.
Tho Silk is still one of the greatest fantasy characters ever created.

I tried the Belgardian again it's just a no-go. So i renegotiated the deal with my pal. I picked up the first book of a SF series he recommended (Silo series by Hugh Howey). I'll do that and he'll read the MBotF. Turns out he already had GotM floating around on his kindle but hadn't read it.

I mentioned a couple months ago that I had lent out my copies of GotM and DG to a woman I work with. and she has finally gotten around to reading them. She said she was bored and baffled by the first 150 pages of GotM, but now she is getting bowled over and is devouring the rest of the book in huge swaths! YAY!

I'm already 700 pages into Towers of Midnight (in the ~1250 paperback). I dunno if this book is better than average for the series or I just have the rush of being almost done, but it's got me pretty hooked.

I always said that Sanderson saved the series for me - I'm not sure if it was actually him, the fact the story of the last three books was more interesting or a combination of the two, but I enjoyed Towers.

Those wanting to read The Flamebearer I just finished it - it's brilliant. Up there with some of the best ones in the series, and you may even get a little emotional at the end.

Reading this forum most days has made my to read pile so big! I haven't read too much fantasy until I started at the beginning of this year, and have absolutely no idea what to prioritise on my TRP!

Maybe you should first find out what you like. Read books from all the fantasy sub-genres, read some of the more well known authors and then follow through?

I read and finished Seveneves. Very good book with a bad last third.

I reviewed it on Goodreads. Wondering whether to post a review in the Review sub here.

Yeah that's what im trying to do, I like/love most of what I have read so far, including Malazan (only on book 5), the Blade itself by Abercrombie, Dresden files (only on book 4), Dune and Greatcoats trilogy. Im going to read Acts of Caine next I think as that seems to get a lot of attention on here!

Unless you read as fast as Andorion, there is no hope. You will never conquer your TRP.

You should read the first 4 books of Codex Alera and then never read the last 2 books. It's the way I am sure Butcher meant for the series to be experienced.

Do not listen to our resident heathen Apt. The last two books are amazing.

I'm just not sure Butcher would agree with you, QT. I mean if he wanted us to read the last two books, why wouldn't have made them good books? That seems much more sensible to me.

They are spectacular (as in, filled with spectacle scenes), but the plot gets much weake once the rebellion arc is resolved and

Spoiler

So I'm with Apt on this, the series gets weaker towards the end. But topping the awesome of Book 2 would never be easy.

I'll say this for Codex Alera, it's better than late-period David Eddings.

Good.

If I have to suffer, ALL OF EVERYONE ELSE must suffer too.

As far as prioritizing, you don't really. Just go w whatever you feel like reading. Me, I try to shift the tone/type... if I blast thru an epic fantasy series, I'll read some urban fantasy next, then maybe something One and done darker... and all of that gets punted if one of my 'priority' authors has a book come out at any point.

If something is getting a lot of positive buzz on forums I frequent, I may read it sooner just to be able to participate in the discussion while it's hot.

Also, peer pressure.

If you're looking to prioritize authors, may I suggest an up-and-comer named God? He's got a couple books out already you may want to get your hands on.

After Erikson, my priority authors are Bakker, Stover, and Sanderson.

Wait, don't you mean ...

Spoiler

Don't read the spoiler until after finishing book one. :(
