Hit pause on the WH40k reads, to get into Tolkien's TALES FROM THE PERILOUS REALM. It's pretty awesome to finally sit down and read things like ROVERANDOM and the extra TOM BOMBADIL stuff. Also, this volume reprints Tolkien's entire essay "On Fairy-stories", which should make for a nice read.

Also Ce'nedra is almost an annoying a character as Faile or Mhybe

She's more annoying than Mhybe. Don't know about Faile because I never got that far when I tried to read WoT.

I recently reread the Elenium trilogy. It's still fun in a retro braincandy way.

I don't think I can bring myself to go that far. Maybe if I found the books for like 20p each in a charity shop I'd be tempted but I think after the 2 "prequels" about Belgarath/Polgara I will be done with Eddings.

Asteroid Made of Dragons was a lot of fun. I liked how it felt like the protagonists were in the middle of their story...and then yesterday I discovered that's because AMoD is actually the third book! The first two (Spell/Sword and The Riddle Box) are on Amazon Kindle for 99 cents (AMoD is likewise 99 cents over on Inkshares) so I grabbed them and started in.

May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. To be fair, I'm only a little into the first one, but #3 was strong enough for me to recommend the series just based on it. So far #1 seems maybe a little less polished than the third (which makes sense) and maybe a bit more straightforward, plot-wise (though that could obviously change.) On the plus side, it's engaging enough that I barely notice that the ebook formatting is pretty rough/rudimentary. (It seems like 1 & 2 were self-published, whereas 3 got a more professional production.)

finished The Buried Life by Carrie Patel. Neat little book, basically post-apoc dystopia slash noir mystery and political thriller. no real "fantasy" elements per se, but still fun.

plot twists were a tad predictable. Charcters were mostly archetypes and dialogue was awkward at times. Still, for a debut it's all right, and pacing was strong - and that's the main thing I look for to keep going with a book.

Only 4 days left until vacation. I'll start Moorcock's Byzantium Endures in commute, since it was going to be one of the vacation read books anyhow. The other book I was thinking of bringing was Stand on Zanzibar , and possibly the River of Gods

EDIT: I'm like 3 chapters into Byzantium Endures and loving it. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna order the other 3 Pyat books a s a birthday gift to myself.

I liked the Elenium and the first part of the Tamul trilogy better than the Belgarion/Mallorean stuff, that's why I went for a reread of the fomer, for old times sake. :rtfm: Not going back to Garion, Ce'Nedra and Polgara any time soon. :rtfm:

Finished up ROVERANDOM by Tolkien (which was a short piece written for his middle son when he lost his toy dog at the beach) and enjoyed it. It's probably my least fave of his writing so far mind you, but moreover because it's a children's story that is a TAD repetitive in the telling...that said, it's wonderfully imaginative and like all Tolkien's children's work it NEVER talks down to the kid-aged readers. I feel like this would make a great bedtime read for a young one, and I may read it to my daughter when she's old enough. Next up in the TALES collection is the Farmer Giles one.

Moving on to Dragonlance 2.

IIRC 2 was always my fave (DRAGONS OF THE WINTER NIGHT right?), as it's got the whole Sturm & Laurana (Commander) plot line when they go to the icewall. Something about their camaraderie always struck me as excellently written. Plus I always felt that Laurana deserved FAR better than Tanis Half-Elven...and I always felt that somewhere, Sturm and Laurana's bond/love for one another burns unrequited.

Anyways, enjoy!

How are you enjoying it? I'd like to get to the first book before the end of year, or at least before the show comes out.

Finished up TALES FROM THE PERILOUS REALM by Tolkien. Solid throughout, but the best bit are easily the Midde-Earth-focused Tom Bombadil verses...incuding the one that was written at the beignning of the 4th age, apparently by Frodo himself as he was heading into the West.

Starting Jodi Taylor's historical time travel series with JUST ONE DAMNED THING AFTER ANOTHER. I hear it's Connie-Willis-lite, madcap time travel adventures by historians...and it's a whole series, so I hope to enjoy it.
