according to goodreads 4th volume "Tyrant's Throne" is expected to come out next year

I'm reading WHAT TO EXPECT: THE FIRST YEAR by Murkoff....and yes this is a baby book. It was assigned reading by my wife. It's interesting, and I'm learning lots of little things I didn't know (there is also lots of common sense)...but as warned by my best friend at a certain point it will all just mush together in my head and I'll get better use out of it as a reference guide on the fly AFTER baby is born. At any rate, I know more stuff than I did when I started. It's not the most intuitively laid out volume, but it's comprehensive in full.

After that I'm unsure what I'll read.

Man, Seveneves just slowed way down once I hit Part Three. I'm finding it hard to get as engaged when Stephenson goes off on rambling asides about totally made-up stuff, as opposed to the usual (vastly-more interesting) based-in-real-life stuff.

All I want is a few uninterrupted hours where I'm not otherwise exhausted to read FoL. Apparently this is too much to ask for from the universe. Am around 35% and craaaaawling, no fault of the book.




Meanwhile, started THE MARTIAN in earbook.

I see the issues some people had with the math, but the narrator moves it along at a good pace and its a fun listen, even having seen the movie and knowing more or less what will happen.

Finished Black Sun Rising by Friedman. It took me a lot longer than I anticipated. I don't think her style aligns with my tastes. I never really got attached to the characters, didn't really dig the "magic" system. Yet, it wasn't a bad book, just not in my wheelhouse.

On to Warriors of the Storm (Saxon Stories #9) by Cornwell. I'm looking forward to Uhtred owning some aerslings!

I was in the same boat. Didn't nearly like it as much as I expected from its reputation. I will say though that books 2 & 3 are both much better, especially in terms of having the characters do interesting things in interesting locations with other interesting characters. It goes from being a Vampire Hunter D to like a Vampire Hunter B, B+, something like that.

Yeah, the Vampire Hunter D books are atrocious, though. (At least, the translated novels are.)

I'm 200 pages in and I've reached the 9th chapter, called "A Pair of Silverpikes". Now we know from previous books that silverpikes are pesky fish that can even be dangerous, as Siuan Sanche has often remarked. It's this dedication to complex storytelling over multiple books that really puts RJ right up there with the greats. Like with GRRM we get the tale of the Rat Cook in ASOS and a few books later we get Manderly pies. With SE we get stuff like the Letherans mistaking Dal Honese for Andii, or the mysterious KCNR/Sky Keeps story finally coalescing at the end of DoD. With RJ, we have something of equal scope and planning: the long-building characterization of silverpikes as nasty little monsters, and a chapter title that uses them as a satisfying metaphor for some (presumably) similarly nasty humans. And if my reading of "a pair" is accurate, there will be TWO such villains. Man o man o man!

Nearly finished The Drawing of Three – if something permanent doesn't happen to Detta Walker I might scream. I've never found a character more hateful to read (not morally, but because the language of her dialogue makes me cringe so much).

It's still keeping me interested and I want to know what happens next and find out more, which is good, but I'm definitely not loving it. There's time I suppose.

The answer to your first statement may annoy you. But yeah, I struggled with that book...and in fact I don't think the DT series is actually for me...I'm hesitant to start the 4th book because the 3rd was only "meh" for me.

I quit after book 5, and 3 was my favorite one.

I've finished Uprooted - highly recommend it! I'm not sure why, as nothing in it resembled anything in this book, but it sort of reminded me of Wicked. No idea why.
