Most people I know IRL who rate WoT really highly are the people who read it early in their fantasy-reading lives. Most people I know who read it once they were already well acquainted with the genre didn't really get the hype. Of course, this is anecdotal, and doesn't only apply to WoT. But I do find that certain series' have this issue much more than others, I suppose because they're more popular and common introductions to the genre (the most contentious author in this regard would obviously be Tolkien).

I'm certainly one of those people. I've tried to read it three times and kept getting stuck somewhere in book 1.

Eddings at least has the charme of nostalgia because I read the Elenium books ages ago and enjoyed a recent reread at a time when I wanted some brain candy. :nuke:

I remember not minding book 7 either.

Alison Weir's The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Apparently Martin Luther read Henry's book denouncing his Lutheran doctrine and accused him of "raving like a strumpet in a tantrum." Insult goals, right there!

As I was hopping between the various Chapters locations in Toronto today, I finished "Corum: The Prince with the Silver Hand". Review will be in the Moorcock thread.

Next commute book- the Last Merchant Princes omnibi volume, "Revolution Trade". Hoping Stross can finish strong after the uneven second set.

At home, about halfway through Tim Lebbon's "Fallen". Loving it so far.

Just wait till you get to the part where the ladies see Rands calves, WITHOUT HOSE COVERING THEM!!

This truly is a tale of the calves and the calve-nots.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Finished "Fallen". VERY cool story, sheds some light on why one of the places in "Dusk-Dawn" is as important as it is.

Overall, Lebbon does tension really well, and he's able to throw awesome twists into a typical questing story. Very nice little page-turner, I'll deffo have to hunt down the other 2 Noreela books when I get the chance.

Anyone who likes authors who do bad things to their characters should really check Tales of Noreela out. If you think Bakker is bad, it's nothing compared to "Dusk"

Now I really AM gonna start the FoD re-read. but first I'll have to get back to my project of "reading Gunslinger in French". I've been slacking on that the past few weeks, due to having take a lot of work home.

Pawn of Prophecy.

Nothing really happened.

I must have just melded all 10 books together in my head and forgotten how dull book one really was.
Was I this easily entertained as a youth?
I was concerned that once I read Pawn I would succumb to a childish longing for punishment akin to my recent self flagellant foray into Feist's protracted struggle to milk the poor midkemia cow to death, and be compelled to read all 10 again. But I feel no such compulsion, this book was... Well a nothing really. Whiny teen get scolded by Aunt could be the tagline for nearly every page. Blargh. I had such fond memories, I knew they were dross on a real level compared to modern fantasy, but I thought I would have at least got a nostalgia kick from rereading, like I reread a Hardy Boys book a few years ago, just to see, and yes it was tosh, but it was enjoyable tosh.
Pawn of Prophecy is just all tosh.

Not tosh at all, but utter setup, except for a bit at the end that's mostly Garion avoiding people doing the real fighting. QUEEN OF SORCERY is when stuff gets fun.

Oh you sly devil you, now I have to read them all!!

In the last lap of Gordon's "Rules of the Game" and I have to say this is an excellent book if you want to understand why Jutland turned out as it did. The author goes into a lot of detail and backstory but for any history/military/navy buffs thats a good thing as he maps out institutional and cultural factors that were very important. I think I am going to read a history of Edwardian England later just to confirm a few hunches I have.

Started a A Shadow in Summer yesterday and am already halfway through. I see a lot of parallels to Abraham's more recent Dagger and Coin series - Cithrin and Amat are pretty interchangeable. That's not really a downside.

The worldbuilding has been on point so far. The andat and the rules surrounding them are ingenious.

Seedless reminds me a bit of Jemisin's Nahadoth.

I hope you have the whole Quartet with you. "Cure for Cancer" really mixes things up, and it takes a long while for the shift to get any semblance of an explanation.

Enjoy the mindfuck. "Cure for Cancer" is the strangest one of the 4 in every way. "English Assassin" is just awesome, whilst "Condition of Muzak" is ALL THE THINGS.

Michael Moorcock, The Cornelius Quartet. Insane book that will make your comprehension of time and space explode. Or leave you feeling you just had a really good acid trip.

Started the FoD re-read. Since the recent debacle with FoL publishing date being pushed back to May, but me having a pre-order that's suppposed to arrive in April, I now have no idea when to expect the book.

Figured I'll read a chapter a night and that should space itself out nicely for a bit.
Started Chapter 1 and already floored (again!) by all the "new" info, when compared to MBOTF. I think I'm gonna be making brief notes as I go in case I finish a few weeks before FoL comes out and I read something else in between.

What's this pushing back about? I just checked Amazon, the Bantam book is still scheduled for April

What Dune are you on?

I am nearing the end of Part 1, of Dune. I searched and it seems like there is no Dune thread. I might make one, as I am going to read all 6 books and I have a few things to say.

Go for it. I have hot takes to share on the series.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
