I agree, if you ignore the bit about him not shutting the hell up or the parts which are long and rambling and would evoke the wrath of the MSWord paper-clip man ("Hello, it appears that you are composing a rambling speech...")

I had to "translate" parts of that damned book for 3rd year Latin... *shudders* it sucked. A LOT.

Finished A Sundial in A Grave by Mary Gentle.

I've been avoiding it for some time because its not got the same military setting as Ash, however, it turned out to be a great book nevertheless.

Can someone explain to me what is with Robin Hobb? Everyone I've spoken too says its really good, but I just couldn't get into it at all. Is the start of the first book just really poor? Or is it the same all the way through?

I haven't read Latro in the Mist, but if you had trouble finishing it, I think it's unlikely you'll be a massive fan of Book of the New Sun. It really is a prime example of "you'll either love it or hate it". Wolfe's writing has such a dreamy vague and wandering quality that a lot of people just don't really see why things are happening. So many of the incidents in the book can only be described as random, there are two stories within stories and a play contained within Book of the New Sun. Some people would say that they bare absolutely no relevance to the acctual plot, others would say that nothing in the whole series happens for no reason. It's very hard to explain, and I think you really have to try them to be sure whether you'll like them or not. Only propare advise I can offer. Wolfe is a master of prose and themes in my opinion, but lots would say they couldn't really see what was actually going on in BotNS.
