I recently finished the China Study and it's definitely one of the best books I've read. Highly recommended.
Read half of Gladwell's The Tipping Point today as it was recommended by a friend. It's alright, but it's definitely no China Study that's for sure!!!

So I finally started Game of Thrones. I decided to see Seasons 1+2, then read 1+2, then decide based on experience uptil that point.
Saw the first episode, loved it.
Since I am going to be waiting to start the books I will start either the new Kate Daniels or Jemisins Dreamblood 1

1/2 way through Secondhand Souls by Christopher Moore. Typical Moore goodness. The guy is a king of dick and fart humor. One of his characters is about a foot tall but has a 10 inch dick which he keeps wrapped around his waist. When he gets a hard on, he passes out from lack of blood flow to his brain. Also, still listening to Mieville's Explosion. Again, typical crazy goodness.

That's your call. I definitely wouldn't have went show 1st. I think bks 1-3 won't be near so badass for you that way.
I knew you wouldn't like my choice.
Just tell me which do you think was better? the show or the books? If the books were better doesn't matter if I read them after, I'll like them even more as I will spot the differences and appreciate them. As forms of media go I am shamelessly biased towards books.
I am going to start a thread in the GRRM forum for my watch through and read through, like I did for WoT. Would love your comments

I would give it easily to the books atleast for 1-3. I won't say much more without accidentally typing a spoiler.
If you had read 1st you would've imagined your own characters/world etc. then when you had watched it would all seem new. Now you ll be picturing what you watched already for the most part all over again. Where's the fun in that lol

Oh I get your point entirely. But I usually end up differring wildly with the visual representation. For example I to this day I don't agree with the Faramir portrayal in LotR, or how they skipped the whole scouring of the shire thing. As the books are better and undeniably richer, my read may actually be more enjoyable. Having said that I think you will have some "I told you so" moments when I rant later.

I'm a book first hardliner, but I suppose the way you're doing it is fine too. And you'll have plenty to look forward to (incl. wholly excised characters), so there's that.
I started Wheel of Time. I'm currently at 1 chapter per 3 days. How long before I finish, do you think?

I did an average of 2-3 chapters a day. ( I had nothing to do at that time and was at home 24/7. The series took me less than two months. So you will take around 6 months minimum. Note I finished books 12 and 13 in three days as I didn't sleep at all. After that I blacked out for a day.

Omg. It's been months upon months thanks to my kids, and Destiny, since I started Rome 1. I'm finally done with them all! Rome 7 was just put in a box not 2 mins ago. Such a glorious series. I loved it even though I've been on the verge of burning out I stuck it out. It's an amazing 7 bks and everyone who loves Rome era should give it a go!
Wow, well done! I've still got books 5 to 7 to read. I stalled after Caesar's Women and haven't got back to it yet, but I will.
I've been on jury service for the past couple of weeks and thought I'd get a lot of reading done, but spent most of the time chatting instead. I was reading Vince Flynn's Kill Shot, as his books require zero concentration, and got about halfway through it, but now I've finished jury service I can't be arsed to finish the book. I'd been planning to read the last three books of Patrick O'Brian's 'Aubrey/Maturin' series once jury service was over, so now I'm about halfway through The Yellow Admiral.

Finished "Kraken". Clever book, insanely good atmosphere (from a non-Londoner"s perspective, at least).
Current commute read is the last book in Asher's Owner trilo- "Jupiter War". And at home, the Malaz re-read continues with my favourite, MoI.

Finished Ilona Andrews' Magic Shifts.
QT get onto this.
Tried to start ML Brennan's first vampire book but I don't think I am in the correct headspace for it.

After finishing Magic Shifts and being thirsty for more, I picked up the first book of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. I have read halfway and I need two issues cleared up
Mild Spoilers
The protagonist says time and again how she is weaker than werewolves. My question is does this change? Does she get more abilities? because so far its a really boring book where she drives around a lot and talks to people. It hasn't gripped me at all.
How heavy is the romance in this series? There is an undercurrent of it so far, with which I have no problem, but does it get heavy?
On this topic are there any urban fantasy books out there with strong female charactes (both mental and physical) and where the romance is kept light?

The romance in Briggs series is pretty heavy. I only read that series to about book 5, and it never rises above the main conceit for me. I didn't connect with the lead as I did with Kate Daniels (for example).
For strong female leads, try out Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series starting with BITTEN. Lead is a female werewolf. Both my sister-in-law and a good friend (who is a guy) swear by it as a series.
There is a TV series for it as well with Laura VanDerwell as the lead Elena, called BITTEN (3 seasons I think so far)

Noted and thanks QT.
Since we are both Kate Daniels fans I am pretty sure I will like it.
I quit the first Mercy Thompson book about 60% in. It wasn't even the romance. In fact the romance hadn't even kicked in yet. Its just that nothing seemed to happen. And the protagonist is so uninteresting. Maybe I would like it if I was interested in cars.

Finished Scalzi's The Android's Dream last week: some positively ridiculous ideas, but Scalzi builds a gripping (and hilarious) thriller out of them. Totally lightweight, but highly enjoyable.
I've picked up a few more of Moorcock's Eternal Champion omnibuses recently, so last night I got the itch to dive back into the Multiverse and started in on Hawkmoon.

It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
