I finished both Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson on audiobook and City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer today. Alif was an enjoyable listen with some great characters and completely alien to my personal experiences. I enjoyed it alot. CoSaM on the other hand is currently my favorite book I've read so far this year. I will be starting Shriek in the near future.

Now that I've finished CoSaM I'm going to actually start The Skull Throne by Peter V. Brett like I said I was going to a week ago. I'm also starting God Emperor of Dune on audiobook, and Magic Bites on ebook.

Shriek is an entirely different kind of book from City of Saints and Madmen, but at the same time a Perfect sequel. I wouldn't leave too much time between the two though.

I'll be on it within two weeks. I just don't like reading two books by the same author in a row. It helps prevent burnout for me.

I mean, the pirate parts were still contrived, and I read the book knowing how the heist will be pulled off (though the only thing I really remembered was what they were stealing), but... read back-to-back, I didn't notice TOO much of a drop in quality.


EDIT: except the "Locke goes emo" thing was cring-inducing, as it is in every other book where the author has their char "broken down and then rebuilt", unless ththey then hammer the message home that: "SEE THIS? THIS IS STUPID, AND YOU SHOULD LOOK AT YOURSELF FROM A SIDE AND FEEL EMBARASSED IF YOU EVER DECIDE TO WALLOW AND DROWN IN SELF-PITY LIKE THAT".

Reading "republic of thieves" now, a quartwr to a third in so far. The return of "interlude" flashbacks is a welcome thing, and the main story's just being set up. Liking it ok so far.

Reading LORDS OF THE SITH. Kemp has come correct. We'll see whether it holds up all the way through, but so far this is hands-down the strongest offering of the ENu.

I'm finally reading THE LAST WISH by Andrzej Sapkowski and quite enjoying the first few outings of Geralt. This is timed on my part because SWORD OF DESTINY (pimped in the Sapkaowski thread as the next book that SHOULD be read after LAST WISH and is important to the order of reading) is finally coming out in English with a proper translation...but it's not in Canada till December...luckily I'm going to be in London for two days about a day after it comes out, so I'll run into a Waterstones and grab a copy to read on the flight home.

EDIT: 100 pages of this 500 page book is an encyclopaedia? That's a bit of a gip. I also don't care for Bakker's long-ass recap segments at the start of his books... Hmmm.

Why is a 500 page book with a glossary more of a gyp than a 400 page book with no glossary?

Myself, I liked it. It wouldn't work for every book but I love a good overly-detailed appendix. One of the reasons (though far from the main one of course) why I enjoyed DM Cornish's Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy. So much detail went into the world clearly, and while there was plenty in the books and more in the glossaries we still clearly only got the barest outlines. Would love to see more from him.

It's the fact that the glossary in the other books is at most ten or fifteen pages. This one is a hundred pages and has essays on subjects which even a casual reader will have picked up through the series. I was expecting the extra pages to be black, sticky and arousing. Agh.

I've just rounded the hundred page mark on both Magic Bites and God Emperor of Dune. GEoD is such a shift that it almost feels like I'm reading a different series. I'm loving the insights from the stolen journals though. As far as Katestacy goes... I bought books two and three. I'm not in love with any of the characters yet, but the world is awesome as promised.

@Slow I loved NA. It has flaws and Lightbringer bks are loads better but NA is fun and Weeks said he going to return with more bks set in it. Can't wait!

I got like 150 pages to go, it's still ok. The 2 plots are kind of simplistic, compared to the previous books, but it's obv a character study book, so I don't mind. I find myself occasionally ok with such "mellow" SFF.

To be fair, I've never thought Lynch was the second coming of Tolkien or smth, so I didn't have grand expectations for the series. It serves to entertain me, and that's about it.

EDIT: no sooner have I written the above that the plot took a nosedive with the stupid "reveal"

Now, normally, I'm all for making things "epic" and "bigger picture", but this is the one story that really didn't need that, imho.

Anyhow, the election story ended up solid, the flashback story was good. The rest made me sigh in exasperation. And that epilogue.... ugh.

I'm not dissapointed, per se . The bulk of the book is decent fun, and the character arc didn't strike me as trying too hard, or being grating--hell, Words of Radiance made me cringe more in certain parts.

I'm just rather bewildered where Lynch is gonna take the series next. and I'm not in any especial hurry to find that out.

Anyhoo, moving on, I believe I need a quick change of pace, so up next I'm gonna read John Scalzi's next "Old Man's War" novel- The Human Division
