Did someone mention the Night's Dawn trilogy? Someone should...
It is easily his best work I have read and has an epic scope & vast sprawling feel to it that appeals to the Malazan fan in me. As well as a whole explorers/settlers on new planets like in Firefly thing that I love!

For reference, Night's Dawn = The Reality Dysfunction; The Neutronium Alchemist; The Naked God.

He has a standalone called Fallen Dragon but that is a bit rubbish. Misspent Youth is also rubbish but it does sort of explain bits in the Commonwealth Saga (is a prequel of sorts!), which is pretty good but still not as good as Night's Dawn.

I haven't read his earlier stuff or the Void trilogy (which is a sequel to the Commonwealth Saga but like a thousand years later or something) and his latest (which I believe is a standalone too) called The Great North Road.

Eeeehhh..... I really liked Sinfest till the author went off the rails on Feminism and basically changed the entire strip. Still dip back into it occasionally, but no signs of it changing back, so leave it be.

I'll stick with my Schlock binge for now.

Besides, I wanted something with a measure of plot.

Not that they're much like Sluggy or Schlock, but they're rather brilliant.

On the plus side, I finished Gemmell's Lion of Macedon last night. Loved it, which is a relief as I'd just come off the back of a couple of books I didn't enjoy.

As it's horror month on another forum I frequent, I've started The Cormorant by Stephen Gregory. Shouldn't take too long, it's only 147 pages . . .

Abyss, just get the Night's Dawn already! I always seem to find them dead cheap in second hand book shops - I think I got the whole trilogy for about a fiver all told. Amazon marketplace is also your friend but it may be different in Canada.

I recently read The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels there, the second in Catherynne M. Valente's excellent series of Fairyland kid's books. It's all very old-fashioned (Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz are obvious inspirations) and a little bit formal in its presentation, but I really enjoy it.

Also having a go at Kameron Hurley's The Mirror Empire, but not really feeling it yet tbh. It's trying too hard to be different in the worldbuilding, I feel, and while I'm continuing on - and there's a lot to intrigue- I keep being distracted by other things.

I definitely have some Hamilton in the TRPFH... my immediate stack takes priority but i'll get to it at some point.

Powered through book one of the Codex Alera and immediately bought book 2. Accidentally I have read 11 chapters today. thanks for the recommendation. It'll be tough to follow I think.
