So I'm about a quarter of the way through The Way of Kings, book 1 of the Stormlight Archive and actually, despite going in with a slightly cynical view (something this massively popular must be a bit naff, surely) I'm quite enjoying it thus far.

The whole war on the shattered plains is really dumb and seems like a stupid way to do it. Is that the only way to get to the Parshendi? Why not just attack their kingdom instead of sitting in a camp, going out and occasionally fighting before going back to the camp? And then do it for 6 years?

Aside from that I'm enjoying the characters, though I want to see more of Szeth.

I know these books are pretty massive and I'm prepared that there might be a slog ahead at points but actually it's fairly straightforward and fun so I'm planning to read all five.

Nothing (aside from Brooding Kaladin, and Shallan-is-too-studious) will stand out to you as naff till after book 2 at the earliest, and maybe not till after book 3. Book 1 and 2 are both GENUINELY solid throughout.

So the Parshendi are not the main goal of the Shattered plains when you enter the story, it's the gemhearts that the big crab creatures hold as their hearts, as they power the armour suits because they can hold a lot of stormlight, but they are hard to find and difficult to defeat....the territory on the Shattered plains where said creatures live is Parshendi territory, thus the fighting with the Alethi. So they are going out to find gem heart crabs, and end up fighting the Parshendi in the process....this will Ramp up as the book progresses to where fighting the Parshendi becomes more important to the war camp. Their kingdom (or what's left of it) is IN the Shattered plains and no one really knows where it is as the Alethi have not penetrated that far into the plains. The rest of the Parshendi are scattered.

He's genuinely enjoyable...and if you've read WARBREAKER, he will become even more enjoyable later.

I genuinely don't see you having any trouble with Books 1-3, it's 4 & 5 where you may stumble after Sando's old Editor retired and the new one can't seem to tell him no.

I get the stuff about the gemhearts but the whole thing started as a "we must destroy the Parshendi" and seems to have devolved into the gemhearts thing.

But them not knowing exactly where the Parshendi live makes more sense.

I've not read War breaker but I'm looking forward to seeing more of him!

Ah right, I've seen the murder of Gavilar like 5 times now from 5 different POVS (all the books start with it) so my view has changed, but you're right, there is an aspect of "kill the whole race for some of them killing Gavilar" racism shit.

So I have a question - I'm 85% through and really enjoying it - this man can build a world! But I'm trying to remember what happened in Mistborn. I read that a number of years ago so I've forgotten most of it. From what I understand, these books take place a host of years after Mistborn - are the Knights Radiant from those stories? I'm in a scene where Dalinar is discussing the Desolation with Navani and there's all sorts of ancient lore being mentioned. Do I need to recall any of that stuff or is it only tangentially related?

Mistborn (Scadrial I think) is a part of the Cosmere. Stormlight is also a part of the Cosmere. Mistborn is an individual piece and Stormlight is more about the full chessboard.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Different planet in the same cosmere, shards of the master god (Adonalsium....I think of him like Galactus without the need to eat worlds) when he exploded went onto a bunch of different planets and affected the people there with magic powers...Scadrial (Mistborn planet) is one, Roshar (Stormlight) is another.

The thing that makes Stormlight a bit different is that it's one place where "Worldhoppers" (people like Wit who have figured out how to jump from planet to planet) seem to congregate a lot....so there are characters from Mistborn, Warbreaker, and other Cosmere books IN the Stormlight archives and on Roshar under different names...and half the fun is sorting out who is who, as Sanderson gives you hints that should allow you to know who is who.

It should also be noted that the short story MISTBORN: SECRET HISTORY, which has a character from MISTBORN, but takes place AFTER the Mistborn books, goes a LONG way to explaining the three levels of reality in the cosmere and what it is that allows Worldhoppers to exist and do what they do...which in turn would help you figure out what Shadesmar is and how Roshar functions.

This is about the long and short of it, but it's hard to explain because Stormlight is also part of it as well as being the chessboard.

Ok so I didn't know that about Wit haha but otherwise I get you and thanks for that both of you. Finished it last night! It was a pretty exciting ending. Looking forward to getting further into it and I can see I might end up getting more of his books.
