I think I've forgotten to update this for longer than I meant to. Since the last update I've knocked three more books down and started a fourth. Right out of the gate, I have to admit that I really loved all three of them.
Frankenstein - This was so much more than I expected. I've always had the pop culture version of Frankenstein's Monster as my reference point and it's fascinating just how far it's changed from the source material. And that source material is simply gorgeous. The story told through the monster's pov is heartbreaking and honestly impressive for it's ability to make one emphasize with someone that you already know has done great evil.
. While reading this, I did discover that I was reading a revised edition released by Mary Shelley years after the original text was published. After reading a bit about some of the thematic changes that came about due to political and/or societal pressures, I find myself very curious about the 1818 text and will likely slot that in as an October read for next year.
Secondly we have Dracula. Of these three works this is the one that resonated with me the least. That said, please don't take that as I didn't like the book because it's very much the opposite. The
episcopal epistolary styling of the novel was excellently done and really helped to set a good tone of suspense.
Finally, I tore through Kafka's The Metamorphosis. What a brilliant story that is just filled with layer upon layer of metaphor. Such a fascinating framework to touch upon capitalism, illness, ostracization of family, and religion. Seriously, this one blew my mind more than a little.
