Keep in mind that other than Isladar, whose schemes no one really understands, all the kin would rather see Kiriel dead. So getting her back doesn't appear to be on anyone's agenda.

I'm kind of hoping that the author doesn't do the obvious and have

That scene in the healery where Jewel is close to death and Levec/Dane heals her is so wonderfully written. Excellent stuff.

Can someone remind me why the rings that the seer have are important?

So when Kirriel is fighting that demon in the never ending scene in the tavern, she gets one of the rings of the seer and then loses all her power. I think Devon a'terafin has one too? And Kallandaras? I think Member A'Phanael talks about them to the seer (whose name I have completely forgotten)

The scene at night where those random assassins are after Aiden was pretty cool. Kallandaras forcing the guy to stop before beheading him was such a sweet scene!

This was discussed recently, either in the original thread or Abyss' thread. No concrete information is provided about the rings in the Sun Sword series. QT said that more info is provided about them in the Sacred Hunt duology.

The seer's name is Evayne. Given where you're at in the series, if I remember correctly only Kallandras and Kiriel have a ring. These rings somehow limit the amount of power that one can draw/use.

Those rings seem... Silly! Like why would you give a ring that saps power to Kirriel whose power is a very real help against the kin? Though it seems Evayne doesn't seem to actually have a choice on who she gives them to.

It appears that Evayne only gives rings to people whose over-the-top powers could utterly destroy them or the world around them. But nothing in the Sun Sword series reveals why she gives the ring and what the reason will ultimately be.

Ooh some very cool bits I've been listening to (up to Chapter 24):

The scene where Khallandaras kills his former brother in the Kovashai/lady's assassins (and all the reveals around his past that have come with this) was ace, and the scene where he sees the actual Lady herself as he brings the soul to her was great. Lots of information revealed and he continues to be a favourite character (especially now Kirriel has lost her powers and subsequently a lot of her badassness).

I'm enjoying the challenge and the development of Carlos and Anton as they get to know Valendan.

It dipped for a while (the chapter where Kirriel loses her powers is the low point) but it's picking up pace and I'm about 6 hours from the end.

Aside from the random scene in the pub with Kirriel and Aurelius which I didn't like and dragged on waaaaaay too long, this book was excellent. The Challenge kept me interested and the development of character from especially Anton and Valedan was so well written. Jewel got a little bit annoying at times but not so much that I'm unduly bothered. The revelations about Khallandaras (who remains my favourite character) were great and I enjoyed seeing Member Aphanael use his power. The final fight between Valedan and the Southern swordsmen that then went into fighting the demon was very cool and on that note who knows what has happened to Kirriel after she broke the barrier? Look forward to finding out more about that!

Overall I'm still well in for this series! Already have The Shining Court ready to go. However I am taking a break to listen to The Silmarillion as read by Andy Serkis so it'll be a while before I return to this series.

So Chapter 1 and I have questions already.

Everyone seems surprised that Jewel is leaving to go... somewhere... but I thought half the point of book 2 is that she comes to realise that she needs to head South with Val anyway? Why is everyone in shock that she now needs to leave?

Ooh Anya seems fun! Super powerful chaotic mage living in the Shining City, most of the top demons are wary of her, I'm a fan already even though she's obviously going to have to face the "good guys" at some point...
