Maark would definitely hate "Legends and Lattes".

Incorrect. I'm reading it at present and it's basically any comfortable Japanese slice-of-life fantasy light novel but tweaked for Western audiences. Plus the MC is relatable.

Have I been transported to some sort of parallel universe? :ermm:

It's definitely not because I have a thing for hulking orc ladies who could snap my spine.

What have Wizards of the Cost (deliberate typo) and Hasbro unnecessarily fucked with this time?

Here's a good breakdown.

The funny thing is that I have a sketchy feeling that this is an INTENTIONALLY leaked thing so that their "still shitty, but LESS shitty" final release of 1.1 will seem like it's not as bad...when the whole thing should arguably stay as is.

I imagine the mandate comes down from Hasbro more than WOTC, but still....

Like I'm a long time fan of D&D, but this shit is just capitalism-run-amock.

... but on the (possibly) bright side, maybe they'll start churning out more books and inspirational material?... Have AI write them, illustrate them, and read them aloud (with an option for celebrity voices, perhaps). Then they could be funded by microtransactions. Also custom character drawings, possibly animations, AI written backgrounds, AI generated plots and maps... AI anal beads to help you cheat without anyone noticing (not that D&D is anywhere near as simple as chess).... Or 'consult the gods / oracle / intuition / whatever' during a game to get AI advice on optimal strategies?... holograms will be extra. VR, subscription for regular updates with new material, etc.

Sometimes you discover little gems when you actually read AVD's posts instead of just skimming ... ;)

@QT
OK, ta. I had read elsewhere that apparently the original OGL had a clause that meant it could not be amended, overriden or "de-authorised"? I guess it's lawyers at 20 paces now. :(

EDIT: FFS I have issues - the first thing that stood out to me was the caption to the image of the blue dragon with its "horde" of gold. It's HOARD, you dipshits!

The bit about them being able to use any content how they see fit ... isn't that the same as when you have a Fakebook or Insta account and post images (for example)? The provider now owns the rights or something and can do with it whatever they want? Happy to be wrong, as I don't use any of that shite.

D&D CEO: Hobby Is 'Under Monetized' Compared To Video Games

This woman is fucking cancerous, and her resume before having the WOTC CEO job is all the proof you need of that and why Hasbro hired her:

Ms. Williams joins Hasbro from Microsoft, where she most recently served as General Manager and Vice President, Gaming Ecosystem Commercial Team, and most notably drove the expansion of Xbox Gaming and the acceleration of game-creator growth. Prior to joining Microsoft, Ms. Williams spent more than a decade at Amazon, where she led the global growth of their e-commerce direct-to-consumer business Fulfillment by Amazon.

This is someone who subscribes to the business model of "If you're not making BANK profits every year that go up and up and up...your company is an utter failure! This constant need to find new ways to bilk existing end users out of more money to make the graphs go up for the shareholders every year without cease...is fucking insanity. Remember when doing well as a company DIDN'T mean crazy profit growth topping itself every year to be successful prior to the 1980's? Me too.

I would urge people to look at non-WOTC avenues for their TTRPG/gaming fun. D&D is only going to get worse under this clown show.

EDIT: The only silver lining here is that the community is VERY much talking about other avenues now, and a lot of youngish and not-yet-released TTRPG's are being looked at now with new eyes...this would be an IDEAL time for the oomph that exists behind D&D top shift to those grassroots games and lose Hasbro their existing customer base to someone less corporate and less shitty.

And here's the danger writ large, Kobold Press (a company that only exists because of the LAST time WOTC tried this shit with 4e).....a company that wrote a lot of the creative content for recent D&D stuff under contract to WOTC (because WOTC has very little, if any in-house talent who does this).....has decided "Fuck it, we'll do it ourselves" and are making a brand new system and ruleset: available, open, and subscription-free for those who love it—Code Name: Project Black Flag.

So yeah the last time WOTC pulled this shit, it spawned Paizo/Pathfinder, and this time looks no different.

I feel like WOTC fundamentally wishes the TT gaming community was like the video game community where locking a ruleset behind their brand is easy and has been done a long time...but it's never been that, you can't copyright wizards, and elves, dice or math......all it takes is for already creative people in that community to form a new ruleset and their all eating your lunch WOTC...again.

Add in the MtG shenanigans of late, and holy shit..they are dumb.

It's rare to see SUCH an inept corporation who hasn't even the foggiest clue how their business makes a profit.

Just as a 'major' (to use the word loosely) movie is mere months from release too.
Not that i think a boycott by the ttrg crowd will have any major impact (see also every supposed boycott of any comic movie), but the bad press isn't doing it any good either.

In part this comes down to Critical Roll, which single handedly went from a bunch of people doing sllly shit with dice on youtube to multi-million views, merch, cartoon, books, comics, etc, and triggering a mass of imitations, and someone at WotC/Hasbro realizing they got little/no piece of that, then noticing the rest of what was going on with the wider OGL/3pp market that they got even less of.

It's almost funny, the OGL/3pp market exists because WotC coudn't or wouldn't invest in the property and didn't care if others did, which basically kept D&D from utterly fading away until Critical Roll came along.

It's a shiteshow, it will end badly for Hasbro, and the ttrg market - that i don't actually think is massive enough to merit much concern from Hasbro in the same way Warner and Marvel don't care about actual comic buyers - will reformat to other games that let them stab goblins and move on.

Thanks for splitting this off Abyss. Much obliged.

And yeah, regarding Critical Role, the best thing about this is that with a few moves to the left in their model they can TOTALLY abandon D&D/5e as a backdrop for the show/books/comics ect.

Like nothing is stopping the minds behind Critical Role from having some in-universe event shift them to Pathfinder or some other non-WOTC TTRPG model world...the characters and voices behind them are enough to make them be followed to wherever, and it would even make a cool storyline to have them be fish out of water with new races and rules....you know?

And they'v already kind of splintered off a bit....of the 3 existing rulebooks for campaigning in the CR realms, only 'Explorer's Guide to Wildemount' was published by WOTC/Hasbro....both the others are Green Ronin, using the OGL...so the CR crew has no real reason to stick by D&D proper under WOTC....their fanbase (which is huge) will follow them to wherever.

I've known there was a kerfuffle going on with D&D, but I wasn't aware of what it was, until now.

But holy fuck, what a kerfuffle. Yeah, I agree, they're about to shoot themselves in the foot, both feet, with a very big bullet, and a chainsaw. At least.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Wasn't Matt Mercer originally a Pathfinder DM too? I seem to remember some issues with campaign one were him trying to adopt a Pathfinder campaign/setting to 5e. If so, making a switch back wouldn't require much effort.

Has Mercer or anyone CR related commented on the OGL yet?

I'd be surprised if WotC wasn't campaigning (heehee) hard behind the scenes to get them on board.

Nothing official from any of them as far as I know.

Edit: I may sign up for play testing the Kobold Press release. Have to balance a few things and see how much free time I will have left.

Sounds like things are back to the late 3ed times when Pathfinder went past D&D in number of players just because WotC where impossible to work with and had no clue. Probably they are also inspired by the trading card games which are even worse when I hear the tales from friends who still engage with that stuff. Which is one very "over-monetized" area of nerd hobbies, a modell that doesn't seem to work as well with RPG's.

Doesn't matter to me even thought I ran a kind of 2ed game two years ago and is running a kinda of heavily modified pathfinder game for the last year, official material has always been secondary for the hobby. Most stuff is created by creative GM's frequently from rule books that are 10-20 or even 30-40 years old. Which will continue because most of what D&D really is about isn't possible to trademark, its just generic fantasy outside "their" worlds.

Yep.
The CR casts homegame was Pathfinder, but they converted it to 5e when they started the stream.

Which is why some of them don’t really seam to know fuckall at the beginning.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

Am I taking crazy pills or are you guys just not hearing this right: their brand is being under-monetized. I think we have a new champion beating out "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" -- and this one ain't fiction.

Melissa Belladonna has done a lot of stuff on this subject (yes, the same Melissa who used an adult toy in place of a kraken mini). Essentially, as things stand, if you make any D&D content and have agreed to the contract, Hasbro now owns your content and holds all rights to any monetisation. She most recently did a long talk with Redclaw on this subject and I'd recommend following her on it as she's very knowledgeable on the subject.

Disney own Star Wars. Star Wars has KOTOR1. KOTOR1 runs on the OGL. So we actually also have a situation where Hasbro could feasibly approach Disney and say 'we now own all your KOTOR related stuff for free, give us money'. I hope they do. What a shitstorm.

The House of Joe could potentially take on the House of Mouse? I honestly don't think this is a shitstorm that Hasbro would want.

I'm waiting to hear from the guys I wrote with for Arclands as to where this potentially leaves them. Their setting relies on compatibility with 5e, although a lot of mechanics are their original work.

I suspect WotC/Hasbro will want to avoid Critical Role going back to Pathfinder, and I'm seeing a lot of chatter on D&D pages I follow that suggests that's the shift most people will make. I've never actually played Pathfinder, so it seems a good time to have a go :)

If I remember rightly (and I'll have to ask a friend who works for Blizz), WoW or one of their other properties also has some aspect of the OGL in play as well.

Yeah a lot of folk in my circles are looking at alternative games/platforms. I think this will probably do a lot more harm than Hasbro think even if they go back on the change; they've shown that they don't give a shit about the community, and what is D&D if not a community? You don't shit on your userbase like that and expect them to forget. I expect to see a large demographic abandon D&D entirely and move to other options, so I think Pathfinder is a good bet for now.
